Peter Disowns Jesus 69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said. 70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!” 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” 74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.  We now come to the passage that poor Peter is known for, his threefold denial of Jesus.  Rather than being interrogated before a tribunal of Jewish or Roman leader

  Jesus Before the Sanhedrin 57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. Jesus Arrested 47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. Gethsemane 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial 31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” 34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” 35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.  As we continue with the details of Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples, we have just seen the treachery of Judas, who betrayed Jesus for a mere 30 pieces of silver.  Now Jesus informs the disciples that in actuality all of them are going to betray him.  Their betrayal had already been foretold in the Zechariah 13:7 Though they will betray him, Jesus says after he has risen, he will go ahead of them t

Matthew 26:26-30 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” 27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” 30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. These verses renind us what happend at the Last Supper.  The last meal Jesus had with his disciples on Thursday night before going to the cross on Friday.  The context was the Passover meal, which the Jews celebrated every year as part of the Passover festival.  Usually the end of the meal was reserved for eating meat from the sacrificial lamb whose blood covered the collective sins of the Israelites. Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus 14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over. The previous story of Jesus' rebuking the disciples for thinking the woman's gift of expensive perfume was a waste may have finally triggered Judas to begin his betrayal. Luke 22:3 tells us, " Satan entered Judas called Iscariot, one of the twelve "  " His worldly hopes fell altogether at the thought of “burial.” It is a striking juxtaposition: as Mary’s is the highest deed of loving and clear-sighted faith, Judas’ is the darkest act of treacherous and misguided hat e." The Plot Against Jesus 26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.” 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 5 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.” After Jesus is done teaching about the end times and the signs of His second coming, he begins to prepare them for the next step in this process.  He lets them know that he will be handed over and crucified. Meanwhile the Jewish leaders, the chief priests, elders and the high priest Caiphas, begin to plot their assanination of Jesus. But avoiding do it during the Passover feast lest it cause unrest among the people.  These men are always looking after their self interests and how they can preserve the great power they were

Signs of the End of the Age “ Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.  And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come." It is important to realize that the signs Matthew talks about are the signs that the end will come, not the end itself.  These are the signs which have been seen throughout the last 2,000 years since Jesus rose from the dead.  Many believers in Jesus have been persecuted, killed, and hated by others because of their testimony to Jesus.  Many have turned away from Christ and done all kinds of damage to the bride of Christ, the church.  Throughout

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times 24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings.  Jesus was now through with the hypocrisy and unbelief of the Jewish leaders and hence left the temple with these words. He walked away never to return.  Here is a little info about what they temple was like in Jesus' day.  " After Herod’s work, the temple was huge: nearly 500 yards or meters long and 400 yards or meters wide. Herod’s plan for rebuilding started in 19 B.C. and was only completed in A.D. 63, taking more than 80 years. The temple was finished only seven years before it was destroyed. But the Second Temple wasn’t just big; it was also beautiful. The Jewish historian Josephus said that the temple was covered with gold plates, and when the sun shone on them it was blinding to look at. Where there was no gold, there were blocks of marble of such a pure white that from a distance strangers tho

33  “You snakes! You brood of vipers!   How will you escape being condemned to hell? We always think of Jesus being nice and he was certainly the most loving person who ever lived, but being loving also meant speaking the truth. We see this in the continuing diatribe against the Jewish leaders.  This phrase has the idea of “family of the devil.” These religious leaders took an unmerited pride in their heritage, thinking they were spiritual sons of Abraham. Instead, they were more like sons of the devil, not of Abraham. (Guzik) 34  Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify;   others you will flog in your synagogues   and pursue from town to town. Jesus was prophesying about those who would come after him who would be persecuted for his namesake.  We know, for example, Saul, later to be called the apostle Paul, was treated in this way. We don’t know if he was crucified, but he was definitely flogged and pursued from town to town.
