When Will Jesus Return?

13  As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!” 2  “Do you see all these great buildings?”  replied Jesus.  “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” 3  As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives  opposite the temple, Peter, James, John  and Andrew asked him privately,   4  “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?” 5  Jesus said to them:  “Watch out that no one deceives you.   6  Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many.   7  When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.   8  Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. Many people throughout history have thought that Jesus

What is Heaven Like?

Marriage at the Resurrection 1 8  Then the Sadducees,  who say there is no resurrection,  came to him with a question.   19  “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.   20  Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children.   21  The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third.   22  In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too.   23  At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?” 24  Jesus replied,  “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures  or the power of God?   25  When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.   26  Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of th
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts 12  The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.   13  Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.   14  Then he said to the tree,  “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.”  And his disciples heard him say it. 15  On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves,   16  and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.   17  And as he taught them, he said,  “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’?  But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’” It seems odd to place these two stories side by side, but I think you will see how they are related.  In the first stor

The Request of James and John 35  Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 36  “What do you want me to do for?”  he asked.  37  They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”  38  “You don’t know what you are asking,”  Jesus said.  “Can you drink the cup  I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”  39  “We can,” they answered.  Jesus said to them,  “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,   40  but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.” 41  When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.   42  Jesus called them together and said,  “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.   43  Not so with you. The Transfiguration 2  After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John  with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them.   3  His clothes became dazzling white,  whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.   4  And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.  5  Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,  it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”   6  (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)  7  Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud:  “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”  8  Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.  9  As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone  what they had seen until the Son of Man  had risen from the dead.   10  They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising f

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah 27  Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them,  “Who do people say I am?” 28  They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;   others say Elijah;   and still others, one of the prophets.”  29  “But what about you?”   he asked.   “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”  30  Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. Jesus Predicts His Death 31  He then began to teach them that the Son of Man  must suffer many things  and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,  and that he must be killed  and after three days  rise again.   32  He spoke plainly  about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.  33  But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter.   “Get behind me, Satan!”   he said.   “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” It was certainly an interesti

Is There Anything Wrong With Tradition?

7  The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus  2  and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled,  that is, unwashed.   3  (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.   4  When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.)  5  So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders  instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”  6  He replied,  “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “‘These people honor me with their lips,      but their hearts are far from me. 7  They worship me in vain;      their teachings are merely human rules.’ 8  You have let go of the commands of God and are
