35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
After a long day of teaching, healing and casting out demons Jesus is understandably tired.  So he takes a nap.  He curls up against the cushion in the boat and catches some "z's". But as often happened in the Sea of Galilee. a storm kicked up out of nowhere.  The disciples were scared.  The boat is starting to fill up with water.  And Jesus is taking a nap?  What gives?
The disciples wake Jesus up and ask him if he cares or not whether they drown.  So Jesus gets up and commands the wind and wave to be quiet.  All of a sudden the lake is calm and glassy.  Reminds me of the lake I grew up on.  The calm of the lake at the shank of the evening.  Perfect for waterskiing.  I digress.  Jesus checks in with his disciples.  He mildly rebukes them for their lack of faith.  If I were them I would have been like, "Really Jesus did you enjoy your nap while the boat was nearly swamped with water?"
But more than being upset with Jesus, they are terrified.  They had seen his healing of sick people, delivering people of demons, but the power to rebuke the wind and the waves. Really?  Who is this guy?
What can we learn from this story?  Who do you turn to when the wind and waves appear out of nowhere?  Sometimes life is going so smooth and then in the blink of any eye the storm kicks up.  And sometimes it seems like Jesus is asleep in the boat in our lives too.  But the truth is he is always with us.  When the water starts rising and coming over the boat, he is with us.  The psalmist says, "Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me!"  My friends no matter what storm you are facing, Jesus will never leave or forsake you?  Though the storm may last through the night, calm will come in the morning.
