One Year Bible, Monday January 31st - The Passover

Congratulations! We have reached the 31st Day of reading the One Year Bible, 1/12th of the whole bible. If you are a little bit behind, don't worry. Consistency is the key and the most important part of the discipline of reading the bible!  God bless you as we head into February!  Click Here To Listen to the Readings Exodus 12:14-13:16 The Passover The other aspect of the Passover celebration is the unleavened bread. Leaven was a metaphor for sin. A little bit of it can work through the whole batch. For the 14th day through the 21st day, they could not eat anything but unleavened bread. Also it was a reminder that they had to leave quickly and could not wait for the dough to rise.  We also see in this passage the importance of families passing down and teaching kids to remember what God has done for them.  The best place to teach faith is in the home. Parents spend more time with their kids than any other figure in their life.  " When you enter the land the Lord has promised t

Click Here for the Audio Readings   Exodus 10:1-12:13 The Plague of Locusts The next plague is a plague of locusts that destroys all the Egyptian crops. Once again Moses warns Pharaoh about the consequences of not letting the Israelites go to worship God. This time even his advisors tell him to get rid of the Israelites, for what they have already done to Egypt.  Again Pharaoh puts a qualification on their leaving. He will only let the men go, not the women and children and flocks. Moses and Aaron were driven out of his presence.  Moses stretched his staff and a strong wind blew locusts over every square inch of the land. Everything green was eaten and the only thing that could be seen on the ground was black due to the sheer number of locusts. Once again Pharaoh begged and asked for forgiveness for his sin. God caused the locusts to leave, and once again Pharaoh hardened his heart. The Plague of Darkness Moses stuck out his hand so there was darkness over the whole land for three days

One Year Bible, Saturday January 29th - The Plagues on the Egyptians!

Click Here To Listen to the Readings Click Here To Read Exodus 8-9 The Plagues God had told Moses that Pharaoh would resist every plague and harden his heart. The pattern for the plague is that Moses tells Pharaoh something the Lord will do if he doesn't not let the Israelites go and worship their God in the desert. The first plague was a plague of frogs which filled the land. Pharaoh begged Moses to tell God to stop the plague, which he did. But when the plague of the frogs stopped, Pharaoh changed his mind and wouldn't let the Israelites go. Next came a plague of gnats. Though the magicians could mimic the plague of frogs. they could not do it with the gnats. The magicians concluded that it was the finger of God, but still Pharaoh refused to let them go.  After that came the flies, but this time they filled the land of Egypt but were prevented to go to Goshen, where the Israelites lived. Pharaoh tells them it is okay to go to God, but to offer their sacrifices right here in

One Year Bible For Friday, January 28th - Moses and Aaron Confront Pharaoh But He Hardens His Heart, Jesus Teaches About Forgiveness and Marriage

Click Here to Listen to Today's Readings Read Exodus 5:22-7:25 After the people get mad at Moses, he goes back to the Lord to find out why he hasn't delivered the people yet. God affirms to Moses that he will remember the promise he made to Abrahah, Issac and Jacob, and he will deliver his people. But even after Moses reports this to the people, they are still discouraged. So God told Moses to go tell Pharaoh again to let his people go. Moses doesn't have much confidence and says that if the Israelites won't listen to him, why will Pharaoh, especially since he has faltering lips. But God reaffrimed that Aaron would help him and if He spoke through Moses, though Pharaoh would not listen to him. He would perform miracles and signs to prove to him He was the true God. And Moses and Aaron obeyed the Lord's command. Moses was 83 and Aaron was 80 when they spoke to Pharaoh.  So Aaron went before Pharaoh and threw his staff down and it became a snake. So Pharaoah summoned

He asks God, " What if the people don't believe me or think You sent me ?" So God is more than willing to give Moses a sign. Essentially God gives Moses three supernatural miracles to authenticate his leadership.  1. Moses threw down his staff and it became a snake. Then, he took the snake by the tail and it became a staff again. 2. Moses puts his hand in his coat and it became withered and white. When he takes it back out, it becomes healthy again.  Finally, the Lord said if they don't believe these two signs ... 3. Moses would take water from the Nile river and pour it out on the land. It would become blood. You think that would have given Moses some confidence, but then he points to the fact that he is not very eloquent as a speaker. The Lord assures him that he was One who gave him the ability to spe

One Year Bible for Wednesday, January 26th Moses Flees to Midian and Meets God in the Burning Bush Jesus Teaches the Disciples About Faith and Why They Should Pay the Temple Tax

Click Here to Listen to the Readings Click Here To Listen to Exodus 2:11-3:22 Moses Flees to Midian When Moses saw a fellow Jew being mistreated by an Egyptian, he killed him and hid him in the sand. Soon the Pharoah found about this and Moses fled to Midian. Midian was a son of Abraham. Midian was south of Canaan. Moses saw some local shepherds mistreating the women who had come to water their flocks, so he rescued them. When the women went home, they reported it to their father. The father, Reuel, took Moses in and evenually Moses married his daughter, Zipporah. Moses and Zipporah had a son Gershom. During this period the Israelites were still being mistreated by the Egyptians, and their cry for freedom was heard by God. God remembered the covenant he had made with Abraham, Issac and Jacob, and he would use Moses to be a messenger for that plan. Though Moses acted rashly by killing the Egyptian who was mistreating his fellow Jewish brother, God saw he could use his passion for Israel

Click Here to Listen to the Four Readings Click Here To Read Genesis 50:1-26 Jacob dies and Joseph fulfills his promise to his father to bury him in the Cave of Machpelah, where Jacob's ancestors, the Patriarchs of the Jewish faith were buried. This was the site and the land Abraham had bought from Ephron the Hittite. It was Abraham's way of believing in God's promise that one day his descendents would dwell in the land of Canan.  Pharaoh once again is amenable to Joseph honoring his promise to his father. A great number of Pharaoh's chariots and senior members of his household went with Joseph.  Joseph Reassures His Brothers Joseph's brothers thought that with Jacob gone, Joseph might finally retaliate against them. When they expressed this to Joseph, he broke down and wept. It was the last thing on his mind. He had made peace with his brothers when he saw them and harbored no ill will toward them. Sometimes it is just as hard to receive forgiveness as to give it.

One Year Bible Readings and Commentary for Monday, January 24th - Jacob Blesses His Sons Before He Dies, Jesus Calls Out the False Teaching of the Pharisees

Click Here To LIsten to the Audio Readings Click Here to Listen to Genesis 48:1-49:33 Jacob and Joseph's Sons As Jacob is sick and dying, he decides to bless Joseph's two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. He further states, "They are his sons". By saying this, these two boys would have an equal inheritance as his other 11 sons. By adopting them, Jacob now had 13 sons to bless.  "Luz" is another name for "Bethel", where Jacob's received God's covenant. Jacob recounted the blessing given to Abraham in Genesis 17, that he would be fruitful and multiply into many nations.   Jacob then does something unexpected. As he goes to bless the two boys, he crosses his arms and puts his right hand on Ephraim, instead of Manasseh. The right hand was the hand of strength, which is why Jesus ascended to the right hand of the Father, the seat of power. Does this sound familiar? Jacob who tricked Esau of the birthright, and secured his Father's blessing when he

Click Here to Listen to the 4 Readings   Click Here to Read Genesis 46:1-47:31 Jacob's Journey to Egypt Jacob left everything behind to say goodbye to his son, Joseph and to say goodbye to this world. He packed up all his stuff (you can't take it with you!) and headed to Beersheba. " Israel’s grandfather Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba many years before and had called on the name of the LORD there (Genesis 21:33). Isaac received a special promise from God and built an altar for sacrifice there, calling on the name of the LORD (Genesis 26:24-25). It was probably at this very place Israel sacrificed, remembering what God had done before. " (Guzik) We see a genealogy of Jacob's sons.  His lineage was an affirmation of God's covenant with Abraham, he would bless Him and his descendants through Issac the promised son. Specifically, God had brought Jacob's family down to Egypt and through Joseph's leadership and faithfulness to God, God brought

Click Here to Listen to All Four Readings Click Here To Read Genesis GENESIS 44:1-45:28 The climax of the story of Joseph and the reunion with his brothers has been building slowly in the story. Finally, Joseph reveals himself to his brothers. Joseph had one more test for his brothers to see if they had changed. As they left, he had one of his servants put his personal silver cup he used for drinking into Benjamin's pack unbeknowst to them. After they had left, the palace manager caught up with them and confronted them for taking their master's silver cup. They fiercely denied doing such a thing. You can only imagine how distraught they must have been, after all they had gone through. But sure enough after going through the sacks of the oldest to youngest, they find the cup in Benjamin's sack.  Now they are even more distraught.  When they get back to the palace, Joseph questions them. They vehemently tell Joseph they will all stay back as his slaves rather than giving up B

He makes Simeon stay behind with him as a security deposit. Joseph secretly puts back the money they had paid him for the grain into their backpacks. On their way back, the brothers argue about whose fault it was that they were in such a mess. Reuben, the oldest, reminds them that he had warned against what they wanted to do to Joseph. While they were on their journey, they open their backpacks only to find the money they thought they have given Joseph in their backpacks. At this point they think they are cursed by God, and being punished for what they did to Joseph. When they arrive home, they come clean with Jacob and tell him everything that happened. When they relate to him that the "governor" was harsh with them and ordered them to bring back their youn
