Mark 11 - What Made Jesus Really Mad?

Mark 11 - NIV Enduring Word Commentary Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King 11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’” Today we begin to see the events leading to the cross. Jesus sent two disciples, we don't know which ones, to get a young colt that had never been ridden before. If anyone asked why they were taking the colt, they were to say, " the Lord needs it and will return it asap" . If I were a disciple, I might have been a little skeptical of Jesus' request. It is not every day you walk up and take someone's colt and give the reason for taking it,"Lord needs it!". With this, Jesus established that H...

Mark 10 Redefining True Greatness

Mark 10 - NIV Mark 10 - Enduring Word Commentary Divorce 10 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.  2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”  3 “What did Moses command you?” he replied.  4 They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.” 5 “It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. 6 “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a] 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b] 8 and the two will become one flesh.’[c] So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”  10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries an...

Mark 9 - In the Name of Jesus!

Click Here to Read or Listen to Mark 9 Click Here to Read or Listen to Enduring Word Commentary 9 And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.” This may be a reference to what is coming next in this chapter, the Transfiguration, where 3 disciples saw Jesus' glory.  The Transfiguration 2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Jesus gave Peter, James, and John a glimpse of his future glory. Some people wonder if people from the Old Testament will be in heaven, and this passage seems to indicates that they will. Elijah and Moses were two significant figures in the Old Testament. Elijah represented the p...

Mark 8 - Do We Make Christianity Soft?

Mark 8 - NIV Mark 8 - TPT Enduring Word Commentary Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand 8 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”  4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”  5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.  “Seven,” they replied. This story is very similar to the story when Jesus fed the 5,000. Both of them were motivated by Jesus' compassion for the people. Once again the disciples were not sure how they were going to find enough to eat for the people. Apparently they had forgotten what Jesus had done with the five loaves and two fish. This time they had seven loaves and the fish are not mentioned initially....

Mark 7 - Sometimes the Crumbs Are Worth Waiting For!

Mark 7 - NIV Mark 7 - TPT Enduring Word Commentary That Which Defiles 7 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[a])  5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?” The Pharisees were now on full alert. If Jesus continued to attract such big crowds, how would it affect them. I am sure they had already heard reports from the synagogues of Jesus' teaching, and his following among the Gentiles. How would they knoc...

Mark 6 "More Than A Carpenter"

Mark 6 - NIV Mark 6 - TPT Enduring Word Commentary A Prophet Without Honor 6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.  “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.  4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. Jesus' hometown was Nazareth. Jesus fled from Jerusalem, when evil King Herod tried to kill him. Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt, while Herod killed the boys two years and ...

Mark 5 - Do We Pray for Healing Enough in the Church Today? Yes or No?

Mark 5 - NIV Mark 5 - TPT Enduring Word Commentary - Mark 5 Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man 5 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[a] 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. This is the most detailed description of a demon possession we have in the New Testament (Guzik).  When have seen already in Mark that demons were some of the first ones to recognize Jesus' power and authority. We see that demons do have physical power, as the man had almost supernatural power to break chains etc... I.e. There was no one who could subdue him. He was also tortured emotionally and would cut...

Mark 4 - Soil Condition Matters!

Mark 4 - NIV Mark - TPT Mark 4 - Enduring Word Commentary The Parable of the Sower 4 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.” Jesus often taught out in the open air, this time at...
