Titus 3 - Are You Leading a Fruitful or Unfruitful Christian Life?

Click Here to Read or Listen to Titus 3 Saved in Order to Do Good 3 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone. As Paul continues the theme that our salvation should also lead to the way we lead our life. We are saved to serve. We are saved to live a life worthy of our calling. We are saved to be a witness to the world of what a true Christian looks like. In this case it involved being submissive to the governing authorities, most likely Rome. Though they were under the heavy hand of Rome, as believers they needed to show that they were under a different Lord. To follow Jesus meant to be peaceable, considerate, and gentle to everyone. This is a great reminder to us today even when we disagree with our governing authorities. There is always a way to express our disagreement, and at times we need to stand up to gross inju, stice ...

Titus 2 - The Grace of God Teaches Us to "Just Say No!"

Click Here to Read or Listen to Titus 2 2 You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. 2 Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. Once again Paul urges the spiritual leader, in this case Titus, to teach sound doctrine. This is where we get the term "orthodoxy", which also means right teaching. Though this is focused on what we believe, it certainly doesn't exclude how we live, for the two are inexorably linked together. Right belief should always lead to right behavior.  Paul then goes on teach what this means for different groups of people in the church. The older men should have wisdom and maturity to share with the community. They should be the stable force in any church. Just because someone is older in age though doesn't mean they are spiritually mature. Spiritual maturity is achieved through obedience to God's command and submitting to the power of the Holy Spiri...

Titus 1 -"To the Pure All Things Are Pure!" What Does This Mean?

Click Here to Read or Listen to Titus 1 Paul wrote this letter to his co-worker Titus probably about 60-65 A.D. It was in between Paul's first and second prison terms.  The letter’s theme is the unbreakable link between faith and practice, belief and behavior. This truth is the basis for Paul’s criticism of false teaching, his instruction in Christian living, and standards he sets for church leaders. - ESV.org Paul had recently completed a journey to Crete. He had left Titus there to teach the new church (see Acts 14:21–23).  False teachers were already a problem in the church (Titus 1:10–16), and the letter focuses primarily on that issue. The description of elders (1:5–9) and of proper Christian living (2:1–10; 3:1–3) appear to be worded for intentional contrast with these false teachers. The content of the false teaching is not fully explained (as in 1 Timothy). There appears to be a significant Jewish element to the teaching. The opponents come from “the circumcision party...

2 Timothy 4 - Fight the Good Fight! Finish the Race!

Click Here to Read or Listen to 2 Timothy 4 4 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. Paul gives a closing charge to Timothy. First of all, he is to preach the word. God's Word speaks to all situations and seasons. The Word of God will sometimes correct us. Our lives can get of out alignment with God's will as outlined in ...

2 Timothy 3 - What Does Good Parenting Look Like?

Click Here to Read or Listen to 2 Timothy 3   3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. Though Paul doesn't necessarily know when the last days will be any more than we do, he knows those times will be " terrible ". He gives a laundy list of sinful behaviors, which all are a result of living according to our sinful nature and not in the power of the Holy Spirit. Most importantly he says, " These people have a form of godliness but deny its power. "  What does he mean by that ? A form of godliness may be the appearance of godliness, which is really not go...

2 Timothy 2 - "The Only Way to Coast is Downhill!"

Click Here to Read or Listen to 2 Timothy 2 The Appeal Renewed 2 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. 3 Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. 5 Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. 7 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. Though grace is a gift which we specifically receive when we come to faith, Paul tells Timothy to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Being " strong in grace " means to rely on, hold on to, and lean into. When Paul faced major trials ...

2 Timothy 1 - The Sure Cure for Timidity!

Click Here to Read or Listen to 2 Timothy Today we begin Paul's second letter to Timothy. Here is some background information. (From esv.org) Paul wrote this second letter to Timothy during his second imprisonment in Rome, shortly before his death. This imprisonment was after the one recorded in Acts 28. He probably wrote it in A.D. 64–65, though some would place it as late as 67. Paul gives Timothy a bold, clear call to continue in the gospel despite suffering. Several people have abandoned Paul while he has been in prison, and several others are away on assignments (1:15; 4:9–12). In such a time, Paul’s memories of Timothy’s sincerity and devotion are especially touching (1:3–5). Paul thinks he will die soon (4:6–8), so he writes this final message to Timothy. Paul urges Timothy to stand firm and asks him to come for one final visit before Paul is executed. Though Paul’s death is near, he does not know just when it will come. Paul also asks Timothy to bring his books and parchmen...
