Daily Bread God Offers Comfort to All 3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 5 For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. 6 Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer. 7 We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us. Observation : This is one of four letters Paul has written to the Corinthian church. His plans to visit them had been cut short by some of the persecution he has faced in his travels. Some of those in the Corinthian church who are trying to cause division try to question

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 16 The Collection for God's People 1Now about the collection for God's people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. 2On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. 3Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them with your gift to Jerusalem. 4If it seems advisable for me to go also, they will accompany me. Observation: Paul concludes his first letter to the Corinthians with some practical advice regarding the offering for the Church. As you can see there was at this time no segregation between churches. Paul urges the church here in Corinth to aid and take an offering for the church in Jerusalem, which had some significant financial needs. Corinthians 14 Tongues and Prophecy 1 Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy. 2 For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. 3 But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. 4 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church. 5 I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy. Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 1Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. Observation : In this simple sentence Paul clarifies the main thing he is trying to say to the church at Corinth. Instead of just telling them what they ought to be doing, he is living it. Anyone who would take the role of a Christian leader would do well if they could honestly say this to those they lead. In the rest of the chapter, Paul addresses the role of men and women and their relationship based on the order of creation. Sometimes Paul is misread and portrayed as a male chauvinist. One might conclude that if they read only verses 3-10. But when you read verses 11-12, Paul says that men and women are not independent of each other. Though in the Genesis the male was created first, and the woman was created “out of the man”. Every other man since that time has come from a woman. You might say we need each other!! Then, in the last chapter Paul has some commentary on the way the Corinthians were

1 Corinthians 10 11These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. 12So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! 13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. Observation: Paul recounts the history of the Israelites and how God saved them through miraculous interventions, like the pillar of cloud that led them by night, and the parting of the Red Sea. But the he also tells of how they disobeyed God in their wilderness wanderings and began to worship other gods, despite what God had shown them. Many of them died while indulging in their revelry. Paul wants the Israelites to learn from this example, and to see temptation as a test that can only be overcome with God’s help. Verse 13 is an ou

They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 26 So I run with purpose in every step. Observation: In chapter 9, Paul defends his rights and makes a case that he is indeed an apostle. Because Paul wasn’t one of the original apostles like Peter, James and John, some questioned him. The Corinthians’ coming to know Christ was the best evidence that He was sent by God. Then, he also defends his right to be paid by his work from those he ministers too, but points out that he has preached the gospel to them free of charge to avoid any question of his motives. Observation: Paul distinguishes between the philosophies and wisdom of the world, and the wisdom of God. Paul doesn’t pretend to be an eloquent or flashy speaker, but admits that he fully relies on the Lord for His wisdom and the Spirit’s power. Paul then goes on to say that those who do not have the Spirit of God within them will not be able to understand, and will not accept the things of God because they are spiritually discerned.
