Daily 1 Corinthians 10

1 Corinthians 10

11These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. 12So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! 13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Observation:

Paul recounts the history of the Israelites and how God saved them through miraculous interventions, like the pillar of cloud that led them by night, and the parting of the Red Sea. But the he also tells of how they disobeyed God in their wilderness wanderings and began to worship other gods, despite what God had shown them. Many of them died while indulging in their revelry.

Paul wants the Israelites to learn from this example, and to see temptation as a test that can only be overcome with God’s help. Verse 13 is an outstanding verse which gives us a strategy for overcoming any temptation that comes our way. First, Paul tells us that no temptation has come upon that is not common to all people. Meaning when you are tempted this is not something new under the sun. Others have gone through the same temptation as you have.

Secondly, God will not let you be tempted beyond your ability with his help to overcome the temptation. Literally the word means to “stand up” under the trial. Or “stand firm”, rather than lay down to the temptation’s urges. Finally, God gives us an awesome promise, He will provide a “way out” (an exit strategy) to overcome the temptation, so we can stand firm.

Application:

When you are being tempted to compromise your Christian beliefs, this is a very practical 3 step plan to not fall. 1.) Realize you are not the only one going through it. 2.) Recognize you don’t have to give into it, regardless of what anyone is telling you or you are feeling. 3.) If you look for God’s escape plan you will always overcome the temptation if you use it and God will be with you as you obey his leading!

What are you tempted by? Temptation is always something that will cause us to trust in something other than God. Temptation seizes on “entitlement thinking”, which says I really deserve this anyways. Or it operates on “rationalization” where we rationalize why we don’t really have to trust God in this particular matter.

The problem is as we give into temptation three things happen. 1.) We break our relationship with God 2.) We cause hurt to our family and friends and those who rely on us. 3.) We feel guilt and shame and do not walk in the power and authority God wants us to live in.

Of course God forgives us for our sin when we are truly sorry and turn from a particular sin, but God walks wants us to walk in freedom not slavery. Try this method of overcoming whatever temptation you are going through. I have to admit whenever I have used this model it has worked every time. If works if you work it!

Prayer: God help us to overcome the temptations that are surely to come upon us each day. We know you have given us the power and a plan to stand up under it. May we be faithful to walk in the power you have given us in Jesus’ name and the power of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
