Daily Bread Luke 1

Daily Bread Luke 1
Luke 1
Introduction
1Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

Observation:

Luke’s gospel is written to Theophilus, which means lover of God. It is debated whether this person is a real person or not. Some think this letter is written to all who love God.

Luke is the first volume of Luke-Acts. Luke wrote both books and was with Paul on some of his missionary journeys. Luke’s gospel has many details similar to Matthew’s gospel, but also many more. His is probably the most detailed gospel. We also see in Luke a big emphasis on the power of the Holy Spirit which is keeping with Paul’s theology.

Application:

When we realize how well testified our four gospel accounts are it is easy to defend against the fact that the gospel of Jesus, his life, death and resurrection are myths to make people feel better. Note Luke says eyewitnesses. Also note that many of these books are written within 50 years of the actual events. This gives the bible a strong sense of historicity as there are many eyewitness accounts of the gospel.

So as we read this 3rd gospel may we be encouraged that we have a faith, that is not only based on faith, but also on actual historical events. Although we are called to walk by faith and not by sight, the Christian faith is the most well attested faith and is based on a historical fact, the literal resurrection of Jesus Christ.

As we seek to live out our faith may these testimonies by eyewitnesses give us confidence in faith and as we learn more and we can put our faith side by side with any religious worldview.

Prayer: God thank you for faithful witnesses like Dr. Luke, who give credibility and confidence to our faith. May this inform our faith and gives us even more reasons to believe. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
