Daily Bread Luke 16

Daily Bread Luke 16
10"Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else's property, who will give you property of your own?
13"No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."

Observation:

These verses are the follow up to Jesus’ teaching on the shrewd business manager, who as he was leaving, negotiated reduced contracts with debtors to build bridges for when he would be let go. Again Jesus uses worldly analogies to communicate spiritual truths. Jesus teaches us that how we handle things like our finances will be an indicator of how trustworthy we will be in matters of higher importance.

The principle taught is if we are faithful in small matters this will be an indicator of whether we are ready to be given larger responsibilities.

Application:
What area has God given you to be faithful in? Maybe it is an area you volunteer at church, or someone God has called you to share the love of Christ with. Maybe it is being generous with your finances, or helping someone in need. Faithfulness is high on God’s list of characteristics He looks in those who serve Him.

There are even other versions of this story that seem to suggest that in heaven we will be given responsibilities based on our response to tasks given to us here on earth. We have all been given a gift that has been given to us by God to be used for others. As we are faithful to invest our gifts for the sake of God and the growth of His kingdom, God will increase our ability and capacity to build His kingdom.

Prayer: God thank you for all the precious gifts you have given us, especially the gift of eternal life. Help us to be faithful to receive and share this gift so that others might receive true riches that will never fade away. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
