2 Corinthians 1

Daily Bread God Offers Comfort to All 3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 5 For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. 6 Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer. 7 We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us. Observation : This is one of four letters Paul has written to the Corinthian church. His plans to visit them had been cut short by some of the persecution he has faced in his travels. Some of those in the Corinthian church who are trying to cause division try to question

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 16

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 16 The Collection for God's People 1Now about the collection for God's people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. 2On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. 3Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them with your gift to Jerusalem. 4If it seems advisable for me to go also, they will accompany me. Observation: Paul concludes his first letter to the Corinthians with some practical advice regarding the offering for the Church. As you can see there was at this time no segregation between churches. Paul urges the church here in Corinth to aid and take an offering for the church in Jerusalem, which had some significant financial needs. Paul also references the church in Ephesus, Macedonia (Philippi) and Galatia. This was the network of churches Paul had starte

1 Corinthians 15

Note: For those of you following the sexuality debate on my facebook page, there is some material in this related to those arguments. Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 15 The Resurrection of the Dead 12 But tell me this—since we preach that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of the dead? 13 For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. 15 And we apostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can’t be true if there is no resurrection of the dead. 16 And if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. 18 In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost! 19 And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are mor

1 Corinthians 14

Corinthians 14 Tongues and Prophecy 1 Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy. 2 For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. 3 But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. 4 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church. 5 I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy. For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be strengthened. Observation: At the end of this teaching on spiritual gifts, Paul confronts the issue of “speaking in tongues”. Apparently this was a gift that was given to many of the believ

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 13

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 13 Love Is the Greatest 1 If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. 3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. 4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. 8 Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love w

1 Corinthians 12

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 12 Spiritual Gifts 1 Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this. 2 You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. 3 So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. 6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. 7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. 9 The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift o

Daily 1 Corinthians 11

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 1Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. Observation : In this simple sentence Paul clarifies the main thing he is trying to say to the church at Corinth. Instead of just telling them what they ought to be doing, he is living it. Anyone who would take the role of a Christian leader would do well if they could honestly say this to those they lead. In the rest of the chapter, Paul addresses the role of men and women and their relationship based on the order of creation. Sometimes Paul is misread and portrayed as a male chauvinist. One might conclude that if they read only verses 3-10. But when you read verses 11-12, Paul says that men and women are not independent of each other. Though in the Genesis the male was created first, and the woman was created “out of the man”. Every other man since that time has come from a woman. You might say we need each other!! Then, in the last chapter Paul has some commentary on the way the Corinthians were

Daily 1 Corinthians 10

1 Corinthians 10 11These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. 12So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! 13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. Observation: Paul recounts the history of the Israelites and how God saved them through miraculous interventions, like the pillar of cloud that led them by night, and the parting of the Red Sea. But the he also tells of how they disobeyed God in their wilderness wanderings and began to worship other gods, despite what God had shown them. Many of them died while indulging in their revelry. Paul wants the Israelites to learn from this example, and to see temptation as a test that can only be overcome with God’s help. Verse 13 is an ou

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 9

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 9 24 Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! 25 All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 26 So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. 27 I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified. Observation: In chapter 9, Paul defends his rights and makes a case that he is indeed an apostle. Because Paul wasn’t one of the original apostles like Peter, James and John, some questioned him. The Corinthians’ coming to know Christ was the best evidence that He was sent by God. Then, he also defends his right to be paid by his work from those he ministers too, but points out that he has preached the gospel to them free of charge to avoid any question of his motives. Paul wants to avoid the impression t

1 Corinthians 8

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 8 Food Sacrificed to Idols 1Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that we all possess knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. 2The man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know. 3But the man who loves God is known by God. 4So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one. 5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"), 6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. 7But not everyone knows this. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat such food they think of it as having been sacrificed to an idol, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. 8But food does not bring us ne

1 Corinthians 7

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 7 Marriage 1Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good for a man not to marry.[a] 2But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. 3The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife. 5Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6I say this as a concession, not as a command. 7I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. 8Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. 9But if they cannot control themselves, they should marr

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 6

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 6 Avoiding Sexual Sin 12 You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything. 13 You say, “Food was made for the stomach, and the stomach for food.” (This is true, though someday God will do away with both of them.) But you can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies. 14 And God will raise us from the dead by his power, just as he raised our Lord from the dead. 15 Don’t you realize that your bodies are actually parts of Christ? Should a man take his body, which is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute? Never! 16 And don’t you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the Scriptures say, “The two are united into one.” 17 But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him. 18 Run from sexual sin! No other sin so

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 5

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 5 9 When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. 10 But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that. 11 I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people. 12 It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning. 13 God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You must remove the evil person from among you.” Observation: This is one of those tough passages to interpret in the bible. After all, aren’t we to forgive each other as we have been forgiven in Christ? Aren’t we not supposed to judge, as Jesus said to the

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 4

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 4 Apostles of Christ 1So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God. 2Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. 3I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. 4My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. 5Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God. Observation: There is another verse from the bible that says, “To whom much is given, much is required” . As we discover the secret things of God, the Good News of the grace of God in Jesus Christ, it is both a gift and responsibility. This Good News is not meant only for us, but for all men, women and children. Paul says he cares very l

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 3

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 3 Paul and Apollos, Servants of Christ 1 Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in the Christian life. 2 I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger. And you still aren’t ready, 3 for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world? 4 When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the world? 5 After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. 6 I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 2

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 2 1When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. 4My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, 5so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power. Observation: Paul distinguishes between the philosophies and wisdom of the world, and the wisdom of God. Paul doesn’t pretend to be an eloquent or flashy speaker, but admits that he fully relies on the Lord for His wisdom and the Spirit’s power. Paul then goes on to say that those who do not have the Spirit of God within them will not be able to understand, and will not accept the things of God because they are spiritually discerned. And of course the means for us to understand th

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 1

Daily Bread 1 Corinthians 1 Paul Gives Thanks to God 4 I always thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts he has given you, now that you belong to Christ Jesus. 5 Through him, God has enriched your church in every way—with all of your eloquent words and all of your knowledge. 6 This confirms that what I told you about Christ is true. 7 Now you have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns. 9 God will do this, for he is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Observation: As Paul begins the first of two letters to the Corinthian church, he acknowledges the many and varied spiritual gifts that God has given to this church through the Holy Spirit. Specifically, he points out their gifts of eloquent words and knowledge. Paul assures them they do

Romans 16

Daily Bread Romans 16 Personal Greetings 1I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea. 2I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been a great help to many people, including me. 3Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus. 4They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. 5Greet also the church that meets at their house. Greet my dear friend Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia. 6Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you. 7Greet Andronicus and Junias, my relatives who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was. 8Greet Ampliatus, whom I love in the Lord. 9Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and my dear friend Stachys. 10Greet Apelles, tested and approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the househ

Daily Bread Romans 15

Daily Bread Romans 15 Paul’s Reason for Writing 14 I am fully convinced, my dear brothers and sisters, that you are full of goodness. You know these things so well you can teach each other all about them. 15 Even so, I have been bold enough to write about some of these points, knowing that all you need is this reminder. For by God’s grace, 16 I am a special messenger from Christ Jesus to you Gentiles. I bring you the Good News so that I might present you as an acceptable offering to God, made holy by the Holy Spirit. 17 So I have reason to be enthusiastic about all Christ Jesus has done through me in my service to God. 18 Yet I dare not boast about anything except what Christ has done through me, bringing the Gentiles to God by my message and by the way I worked among them. 19 They were convinced by the power of miraculous signs and wonders and by the power of God’s Spirit. In this way, I have fully presented the Good News of Christ from Jerusalem all the way to Illyricum. Observation
