Daily Bread 2010 – Mark 10
The Little Children and Jesus
13People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." 16And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.
As Jesus continues to turn the old paradigm on its head, today he confronts his own disciples who try to “shoo” the kids away from him. After all, Jesus has important things to do they think, he doesn’t have time for the children. In those days children were seen and not heard. But just like he does with women, Jesus affirms that children have just as a much of a right to the kingdom of God as anybody else.
Why? Because it is not who we are, our age, our gender, or social status that determines whether we get to play a role in God’s kingdom coming on earth as it is in heaven, but our faith and trust in the King. God’s Kingdom, where His authority and power are reign, is present when people acknowledge that their own power and authority is limited.
It is as we understand our identity as children of God and run into our Father’s arms that we are able to access and live in that power. In fact, Jesus is so certain of this that he says unless you receive God’s kingdom like these little ones, you will never have access to its power or authority. The irony is that these kids, who had no power or authority in the culture of that day, were granted ultimate and real power and authority as they came in trust to Jesus.
If we want to have power, like these kids, we too need to humble ourselves and come to Jesus like little children. In doing so we will begin to move and act in God’s power in ways beyond our years. This is true wisdom, to know where God’s power starts and ours ends.
Prayer: God grant us the faith of children to trust in You as our Heavenly Father. Don’t allow pride to get in the way of the access you wish to grant us to live and move in Kingdom authority as your princes and princesses. We thank you Jesus that you are the perfect model of a Son who operated in, under and with Your Father’s authority, and now you rule with Him forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
