Daily Bread 2010 – Luke 21 29He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32"I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 34"Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. 35For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man." 37Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, 38

Daily Bread 2010 – Luke 20 Paying Taxes to Caesar 20Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be honest. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor. 21So the spies questioned him: "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. 22Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" 23He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24"Show me a denarius. Whose portrait and inscription are on it?" 25"Caesar's," they replied. He said to them, "Then give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's." 26They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. Daily Bread 2010 – Luke 19 Jesus at the Temple 45Then he entered the temple area and began driving out those who were selling. 46"It is written," he said to them," 'My house will be a house of prayer'; but you have made it a den of robbers" 47Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. 48Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words. As I was reflecting on the passages in Luke 19, I was thinking this passage would be the least likely I would like to comment on. I felt like I really couldn’t relate because I would never think of making God’s house a place of “buying and selling”. I felt pretty judgmental of those who would do it. But the more I thought about it, I wonder if there are subtle ways we turn God’s house into a “consumeristic enterprise”. As a pastor, of course I am hoping that people “get a lot out of the

John was obviously not that concerned with the public opinion polls. I guess what he might have been trying to do was to wake the people up from their spiritual stupor of going through the motions of religious activity. He was challenging them on the thought that because they had a certain “lineage” ie. they were children of Abraham, that they were right with God. But John challenged them that it was not about where they came from, but that they repented of their self-reliance and self-cent

Daily Bread 2010 – Luke 1 Introduction 1Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. As we end our ninth week of reading the New Testament, we enter into the 3rd gospel, the gospel of Luke. The author is widely known as Dr. Luke, who accompanied Paul on some of his missionary journeys. In this first chapter, we see Luke’s purpose was to write an “orderly” account for Theophilus, whose name means “lover of God”. Perhaps Theophilus was a wealthy patron, or a Roman official, but as Luke says in verse 4 his purpose was that Theophilus might “know the certainty of things he had been taught.

Daily Bread 2010 – Mark 15 The Crucifixion 21A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. 22They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). 23Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. We don’t know a lot about this man, Simon from Cyrene. Cyrene is a major city in North Africa. Alexander and Rufus (his sons) are mentioned by Paul in Romans, and are thought to be missionaries. Whether or not he was known as a Christian and was picked out of the crowd to carry Jesus’ cross because of this on the last leg on the road to Golgotha is not known for certain. What we do know is that Simon didn’t have a choice whether or not to carry Jesus’ cross, it was forced upon him. Little did Simon know he would play such an important r

"Stay here and keep watch." 35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will." 37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.
