Daily Bread 2010 - Luke 2
Daily Bread 2010 – Luke 2
The Birth of Jesus
1In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to his own town to register.
4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
As we survey the events surrounding our Lord and Savior’s birth, we see much irony in chapter 2 of Luke. As Mary’s son, the Son of God, the Creator of the Universe is born, there is no room for him at inn in the town where people of God would be headquartered for thousands of years.
In the rest of the chapter, we see lowly shepherds watching their fields by night informed by an angel that a Savior has been born to them. They dropped what they were doing and went to investigate matters to see if it was as they were told. And sure enough it was. Though there was no room at the inn, there was room in shepherd’s lives to go seek after Jesus and find him.
There were also two devout believers in the story, who also recognized Jesus. They had made room in their lives and were at the temple day and night waiting for the Promise of God to come true. Both of them were overwhelmed with joy, for they knew that the Son of God had finally arrived.
Throughout the Gospel of Luke we will see that those who make room for Jesus will find him, even some of the people who had been written off by the society. Would there be room for Jesus if he came to our town? Is there room in your heart to receive him? One thing is clear if we are looking for him we will find him and he will make room in our hearts for his presence.
Prayer: God we thank you for sending your Son to show us the room in your heart for all of humankind. May we be like wise men and shepherd and seek Him today. May our open hearts be open doors for the Gospel to be shared today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
