Daily Bread 2010 – Acts 3
Peter Speaks to the Onlookers
11While the beggar held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon's Colonnade. 12When Peter saw this, he said to them: "Men of Israel, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. 14You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. 16By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see.
Acts 3 continues with the healing of the crippled beggar, who had to be carried to temple gate every day to beg for money. Expecting that Peter and John might help him he looked expectantly to them, but instead they gave him what he really complete healing in the name of Jesus.
Of course, this attracted a lot of attention for those who were going up to worship and had their daily ritual interrupted by this incredible outpouring of God’s Spirit. Peter is quick to point out that it is not in their own ability or godliness that they have done this, but by the power of God working through them.
And importantly he gives the purpose of all healing, “to glorify God and bring glory to His Son Jesus”. The reality is that all healing is only temporary, but ultimate and permanent healing is to know Jesus and spend eternity with Him. This was the promise given to the Jewish people through Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. Importantly as the passage points out, it is in the name of Jesus that this man was completely healed. Peter made the important distinction of making sure the healing pointed to Jesus not too himself.
As we pray for people in Jesus’ name and commit to honoring and glorifying Him for all that we might do in His name, we will bring glory to Him and cause others to trust in Him which brings ultimate healing.
Jesus, there are so many people around us who are sick. Help us to reach out to them in Your name. We promise to give You glory for all that you might do through us. In Your name, Amen.
