16Be joyful always; 17pray continually; 18give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. A lot of time and effort is spent trying to understand God’s will. And, of course, that isn’t a bad thing, unless we get so caught up over-analyzing it, that we are paralyzed and do nothing. The above verse is a short, but clear statement of God’s will for us. And notice it is not based on situation or circumstance. It is all encompassing. But you might say, “How can I be joyful always? How can I pray continually? How can I give thanks when my attitude is in the tank?” The little phrase at the end has a lot to do with the answer to those three questions. The phrase is, “In Christ Jesus”. It is impossible to have joy all the time, if you are relying feelings or circumstances. Fact is, some days will be lousy, and sometimes we will feel less than joyous. But there is a great phrase from Nehemiah 8:10, “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” How is that

Living to Please God 1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, 5not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; 6and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. 7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. Timothy's Encouraging Report 6But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we also long to see you. 7Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. 8For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. 9How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you? 10Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith. In the midst of the persecution that Paul is experiencing, he is encouraged by the Thessalonians’ faith and that they were as excited to reconnect with Paul as he was with them. Paul's Ministry in Thessalonica 1You know, brothers, that our visit to you was not a failure. 2We had previously suffered and been insulted in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in spite of strong opposition. 3For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you. 4On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts. 5You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed—God is our witness. 6We were not looking for praise from men, not from you or anyone else. Thanksgiving for the Thessalonians' Faith 2We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. 3We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. 6You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. 7And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. 8The Lord's message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. 2Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Paul asks the Colossians to pray for him to have an open door through which to proclaim the Gospel. Back then Paul could be put in prison for preaching and indeed he was. We sometimes don’t realize how valuable our freedom to proclaim our belief is. Would you realize an open door for the Gospel if it was in front of you? Would you be ready to share the Gospel? What do I mean by this? Well if you sensed someone may not know God would you be able to see what might be an open door to a spiritual conversation. Most people are afraid of these open d

12Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him . Colossians 3 is another one of Paul’s classic chapters that really summarizes the whole Christian life. The church at Colossae was struggling with many of the same things as the church of Ephesus. 20Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: 21"Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? 22These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. 23Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence. In the church at Colossae, Paul is confronting two different types of “heresies” or false teachings. One group were the Stoics, who basically the thought the body and its desires were bad. They taught that the way to being like God was to deny and purge the body of its desires. Paul is warning the new believers, the Colossians, not to submit to these legalistic requirements. Paul's Labor for the Church 24Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. 25I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness— 26the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. 27To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. 29To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me. In this first chapter of Colossians, we see Paul’s passion and labor for the Church. We see that he sees the church as one body, and he is a servant for it. We see Paul’s heart for the Galatians in chapter 4, and apparently they had a large heart for him as well, as they helped endure an illness while he was with them on his missionary journey. But now that he has left, the Judaizers (those telling the Gentiles they have to be circumcised to be real Christians) have come in and try to usurp his authority and the gospel he preached to them. Paul’s reveals his true heart for them and the sense of familial bond he has with them when he says in verse 19, “My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of
