Daily Bread 2011 - Mark 6

Daily Bread 2011 – Thursday February 17th, 2011 Mark 6
A Prophet Without Honor
1 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.

What Does This Mean?
This is the famous passage where we hear the saying, “A prophet is not accepted in his hometown.” Despite the miraculous healings that Jesus was doing, the people discounted them because Jesus’ profession was that of being a carpenter. In their worldview they couldn’t link these extraordinary things with an ordinary person.
And hence Jesus could not do any miracles there, except a few people who were healed. This passage reveals that there is a relationship between the openness of a place to what God can do. Of course, this doesn’t mean God can’t do anything he wants, but there is a relationship between faith and God’s bringing in His Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. In heaven there is no sickness, so all healing is a preview of heaven where there is no more crying or disease.

As Martin Luther says in the Small Catechism teaching on the Lord’s Prayer, “God’s kingdom will surely come, the only question is will it come through us.”

What Does This Mean For Us?
If God were to come to your church, your small group, or your home; would he find faith there? If God were to perform miracles would you, or your community try to explain it away, using human logic to discount the miraculous? Faith means simply, “Trusting in God’s promises.” We trust in Jesus’ promise that He is the way the truth and the life. And we trust in His promise that we will do even greater things than he did if we go the Father in His name. That is quite a promise, do you believe it?

Jesus may you find faith where we worship. May we believe that you are the Son of God and that by believing we might find life and healing in Your name, Amen.
