Daily Bread 2011 - Revelation 19

Daily Bread 2011 – Revelation 19

6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:
“Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and be glad
and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
8 Fine linen, bright and clean,
was given her to wear.”
(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)
9 Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”

What Does This Mean?

While chapter 18 dealt mostly with the Fall of Babylon, chapter 19 goes into the final judgment and coming of the Lord. In the verses that follow after this is described as the “white horse” whose rider is called “faithful and true”. In the above passage there is great rejoicing over the wedding of the lamb and his bride, which has made herself ready.

We know from other passages that the bride of Christ is none other than the Church, whose clothes have been made white through the righteousness of Christ. As John fell at his feet to worship the angel, the angel quickly reminded him that he was only a fellow servant with those who hold true to the testimony of Jesus. This is the Spirit of prophecy which calls for the truth.

What Does This Mean For Us?

As we receive communion each week at church, often we will refer this to this as the Lord’s Supper, which is a foretaste of the feast to come. Jesus has invited us to the supper by what He has done on the cross. As we come forward for Communion our faith is in what He has accomplished. We can come to the throne of God with the white linen through our faith in what He has done alone.

Again the focus is on worship of God. As we worship God in Spirit and Truth, we are brought into God’s presence and set free. This is the same truth Jesus brought us as Prophet, Priest and King. In the end of the chapter, we see the beginning of His kingdom being fully realized on earth as it is in heaven. The forces of good led by Jesus, overcome the beast and the kings of this earth, because Jesus is the Word made flesh and His truth is like a sharp sword that cuts down the enemy. To confess is to “tell the truth” and one day every knee will bow (in worship to the Truth) and every tongue will confess (in acknowledgment of the Truth) that Jesus Christ is Lord of Lords and King of Kings. This is where we are headed in these last chapters and blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!

Jesus, we know that one day you will come again in great and promised glory. For now we worship you in Spirit and Truth. We come to church each week to hear the prophecy of Jesus the voice of Truth and then take the bread and the wine as a foretaste of the feast to come, in Your Holy Name, Amen.
