Thoughts for the Day:
In today’s readings we see the cry of King David, which would be echoed by Jesus on the cross, “Oh God, Oh God why have you forsaken me.” David is reaching out to God and trying to trust in Him, who has been so faithful to his ancestors, and despite his current situation. Though people around him mock him and hurl insults at him, he knows God will deliver Him in the end.
In our passage in Genesis, we see the story of Tamar, a story of grief as Tamar has lost two husbands, and her father in law, Judah, has lost his wife. When Judah had recovered from his grief, in his lust he slept with a prostitute, who was situated beside the side of the road and sure enough she became pregnant with twins. When the time came for her to give birth, Tamar’s deception was exposed, but when Judah went to condemn her, she had evidence that he was the father. Judah’s realizes his own sin, and takes her into his house. As she gives birth to her long awaited sons, Perez, outduels his brother in the womb and comes out first. Do you remember his grandfather’s duels with his twin (Jacob and Esau)? Out of all of this comes the one who will be the leading clan in the nation of Judah, and an ancestor of the Great King David, and eventually Jesus.
Finally, in our Gospel passage Jesus is explaining the parable of the weeds and the wheat to the disciples, reminding them that things are not always as they appear to be. The eventual separation of the weeds and the wheat at the harvest time (end of the earth) will be God’s role not ours. In the meantime they will grow together. But the important thing to remember is not who is in or out, but to focus on the building of the kingdom, the pearl of great price.
Where do you feel forsaken by God? Do you feel like Tamar, that you would like to take things into your own hands to make sure your destiny is secure? Has the Kingdom of God become your pearl of great price and are you willing to sell everything in this life to find it?
Prayer for the Day: God, help us to be always kindhearted to one another so others will see your light shining within us and glorify your holy name. Amen.
