God Is Not Too Far Away!
Reflection: There is a wonderful juxtaposition in today’s readings. In 1 Chronicles we see the end of King David’s reign as the greatest king Israel had ever known. At the end of his reign he is able to build the magnificent temple and then pass the torch of leadership to his son, Solomon. And he gives this charge to his son, “And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.” Notice it says “if you seek him, he will be found by you.”
Though the temple is the physical residence of where God dwells among the chosen people, there is a sense that the relationship God has with His people is spelled out in the covenant. As the people sought out God and lived according to the commands he gave them, they would be found by Him. Notice God finds us not visa-versa!
Then, in the New Testament lesson, we have Paul in Athens which was the intellectual center of that day. As was his custom he reasoned with the Jews and God fearing Gentiles in the Synagogue, but also spent time in the marketplace with the philosophers. We see Paul’s ability to make the Gospel relevant, as he notices the idols and statues all around that they worshipped. But Paul picks up on the fact that they are in relationship with worthless temples/idols on altars built by human hands. He leads them to the heart of true worship, which is a relationship with the living God. And he shares with them the gospel that God sent His son who made the world, to reach out to them as if possible to find them! For He is not far from any one of them! Then he quotes one of their philosophers who says, “We are his offspring.”
Built into every human being is a desire to connect with our Creator. The Good News is that God reached down into our world and made himself available through His Son. The same God who was not far from the Israelites as they worshipped him in the temple, had now come closer through the Son. And He had come not just for the Jews but for all people. He started in the temple and then made His way out into the marketplace!
And God has not changed in 2,000 years. God is still not far from any of us. Whereas the temple was where the people gathered to experience a relationship with God, we gather in the Church though it is not the structure that is important, but God’s relationship with us by faith in His Son in the power of the Holy Spirit. And there are still people in the marketplace exchanging ideas about how to know God and even be like god(s). An example of this is the New Age movement which came on not too long ago.
People are still longing to connect with God and as believers we have the Good News that God is not far from anyone of us who would call on His name. God is still seeking and finding the crown of His creation, human beings like me and you. May we be like Paul who longs to make God known by proclaiming God has come near us through Jesus! Amen.

but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.

David’s Plans for the Temple
28 David summoned all the officials of Israel to assemble at Jerusalem: the officers over the tribes, the commanders of the divisions in the service of the king, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, together with the palace officials, the warriors and all the brave fighting men. 2 King David rose to his feet and said: “Listen to me, my fellow Israelites, my people. I had it in my heart to build a house as a place of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, for the footstool of our God, and I made plans to build it. 3 But God said to me, ‘You are not to build a house for my Name, because you are a warrior and have shed blood.’ 4 “Yet the Lord, the God of Israel, chose me from my whole family to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah as leader, and from the tribe of Judah he chose my family, and from my father’s sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel. 5 Of all my sons—and the Lord has given me many—he has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. 6 He said to me: ‘Solomon your son is the one who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father. 7 I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws, as is being done at this time.’ 8 “So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel and of the assembly of the Lord, and in the hearing of our God: Be careful to follow all the commands of the Lord your God, that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your descendants forever. 9 “And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. 10 Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house as the sanctuary. Be strong and do the work.” 11 Then David gave his son Solomon the plans for the portico of the temple, its buildings, its storerooms, its upper parts, its inner rooms and the place of atonement. 12 He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for the courts of the temple of the Lord and all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of the temple of God and for the treasuries for the dedicated things. 13 He gave him instructions for the divisions of the priests and Levites, and for all the work of serving in the temple of the Lord, as well as for all the articles to be used in its service. 14 He designated the weight of gold for all the gold articles to be used in various kinds of service, and the weight of silver for all the silver articles to be used in various kinds of service: 15 the weight of gold for the gold lampstands and their lamps, with the weight for each lampstand and its lamps; and the weight of silver for each silver lampstand and its lamps, according to the use of each lampstand; 16 the weight of gold for each table for consecrated bread; the weight of silver for the silver tables; 17 the weight of pure gold for the forks, sprinkling bowls and pitchers; the weight of gold for each gold dish; the weight of silver for each silver dish; 18 and the weight of the refined gold for the altar of incense. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished. 21 The divisions of the priests and Levites are ready for all the work on the temple of God, and every willing person skilled in any craft will help you in all the work. The officials and all the people will obey your every command.”

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. 18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. 19 Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.” 21 (All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.) 22 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you. 24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’
God is wise in heart, and mighty in strength—who has resisted him, and succeeded? Job 9:4
Who indeed are you, a human being, to argue with God? Romans 9:20
Mighty God, thank you for being available for us; forgive us when we fall and come short of your glory. Father, we ask for a fresh anointing on souls today, that we may experience your Holy presence in our lives. Amen.
