Repentance!
Reflections: The
theme in today’s readings is repentance.
We see in Ezra, under Ezra’s leadership, a proclamation is delivered for
all the people to assemble. The penalty
for not coming to the meeting, lose your property and get expelled from the
community. Sounds kind of harsh, but
Ezra saw their sin as so serious that if they didn’t deal with it they would be
in much worse condition under God’s wrath. Ezra makes a tough leadership call,
but it is for the good of the people, and they respond.
Adding to the drama is a
lot of rain, which was more problematic in those days than today, since many
had made the trek on foot with their families/caravans. In the midst of all this Ezra declares, “You
have been unfaithful now separate yourselves and send your foreign wives (and
kids) back to where they belong.” Again
a tough message, but almost all of them respond, “You are right but give us
some time to make these decision by each family head.” Ezra sees the wisdom in this and agrees to
it.
There are still a few who
were stubborn and refused to repent, including a Levite. Paul says in essence the same thing in Romans
chapter two. He acknowledges there are
some with stubborn and unrepentant hearts who refuse to listen to God. This is a precursor to the Gospel he will
soon announce, in which men and women will be made right with God through
faith. But the Law showed where their
hearts were and their need for the Gospel.
Paul even notes that since the Gentiles know instinctively when they do
wrong or right, that the Law is written on their hearts. Paul makes the case that since we are all created
in God’s image, we have a basic knowledge of right and wrong. When we refuse to repent and do what is right
it is called sin. Sin is “missing the
mark” and we are born with a sinful nature, so by nature we are rebellious and
want to go our own way.
But as we will see in the
chapters ahead, God has a plan for all people Jews and Gentiles, to reconcile
them to Himself and give them a power to live out the plan He has for our
lives. This is called the Good News, and
all of the history up to this point showed humankind’s need for it.
Psalm 34:19-22
19 The righteous person
may have many troubles,
but the Lord delivers him from them all;
20 he protects all his
bones,
not one of them will be broken.
21 Evil will slay the
wicked;
the foes of the righteous will be
condemned.
22 The Lord will rescue
his servants;
no one who takes refuge in him will be
condemned.
Ezra 10:7-44
7 A proclamation was then
issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem for all the exiles to assemble in
Jerusalem. 8 Anyone who failed to appear within three days would forfeit all
his property, in accordance with the decision of the officials and elders, and
would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles. 9 Within the three
days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin had gathered in Jerusalem. And on the
twentieth day of the ninth month, all the people were sitting in the square
before the house of God, greatly distressed by the occasion and because of the
rain. 10 Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have been
unfaithful; you have married foreign women, adding to Israel’s guilt. 11 Now
honor the Lord, the God of your ancestors, and do his will. Separate yourselves
from the peoples around you and from your foreign wives.” 12 The whole assembly
responded with a loud voice: “You are right! We must do as you say. 13 But
there are many people here and it is the rainy season; so we cannot stand
outside. Besides, this matter cannot be taken care of in a day or two, because
we have sinned greatly in this thing. 14 Let our officials act for the whole
assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come
at a set time, along with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce
anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us.” 15 Only Jonathan son
of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, supported by Meshullam and Shabbethai the
Levite, opposed this. 16 So the exiles did as was proposed. Ezra the priest
selected men who were family heads, one from each family division, and all of
them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to
investigate the cases, 17 and by the first day of the first month they finished
dealing with all the men who had married foreign women.

Romans 2:5-16
5 But because of your
stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against
yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be
revealed. 6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” 7 To
those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he
will give eternal life. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the
truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. 9 There will be trouble
and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for
the Gentile; 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first
for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11 For God does not show favoritism. 12 All
who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin
under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the
law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will
be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do
by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even
though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law
are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their
thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) 16
This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus
Christ, as my gospel declares.
The Lord is righteous, He
loves righteousness. Psalm 11:7 (NASB)
God himself is righteous
and he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. Romans 3:26
