He Was Tempted in Every Way!!!
Reflection: The book of Hebrews is specifically written to a Jewish audience, with a focus of showing how Jesus fulfilled the promises made to Abraham, Issac and Jacob that they would be a blessing to many nations. The word “Hebrew” is ambiguous in terms of its origin, but the root of the word means “wanderer”, and usually refers to the nation of Israel’s wanderings before it became a nation and took over the land of Canaan. Since every Jew would be steeped in this heritage, the author uses much imagery and language from the Jewish culture to show that Jesus is indeed the son of God and the Son of man, as promised through the line of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. Hence again we see how important it is for Christians of all backgrounds to understand the importance of the Old Testament, and especially the Covenants God made with the people.
In today’s readings we have some very important verses:
“ 17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”
In understanding the dual nature of Jesus Christ, as 100% God and 100% human, we sometimes err on either side. Today’s reading stresses his human nature. Notice Jesus suffered all the temptations we suffer as human beings made in God’s image. Even though Jesus was tempted he did not sin, and thus was able to make atonement for all people’s sins. Usually the high priest would go into the holy of holies once a year to make a sacrifice with the innocent lamb, for both his sins and the sins of the people. But this was all foreshadowing Jesus, the most High Priest, who would himself offer his innocent life and blood for the sake of the people he came to save.
So as Luther says, “What does this mean for us?” It means that Jesus understands us and knows what we go through. When you pray to God in Jesus’ name, you have someone who took on human flesh and underwent all the trials we face. He experienced hunger, thirst, desire, and a longing to be with His Father in the heaven. He faced evil, persecution, injustice and ultimately was crucified for claiming to be the Son of God, which He was! Simply put there is nothing you could go through that Your Savior has not been through.
So when you pray you not only have a merciful Savior, but one who knows what you go through. So why hold back? Why don’t you pray to the one who knows you, loves you, and is sitting at the right hand of God? Oh the peace we often forfeit because we do not take it to the Lord in prayer. And one day we will be with Him and rule with Him forever with him, as His sons and daughters through the Covenant He made with us! That gives us hope that despite our momentary struggles it will be worth it all one day!
Psalm 106:40-48
40 Therefore the Lord was angry with his people
and abhorred his inheritance.
41 He gave them into the hands of the nations,
and their foes ruled over them.
42 Their enemies oppressed them
and subjected them to their power.
43 Many times he delivered them,
but they were bent on rebellion
and they wasted away in their sin.
44 Yet he took note of their distress
when he heard their cry;
45 for their sake he remembered his covenant
and out of his great love he relented.
46 He caused all who held them captive
to show them mercy.
47 Save us, Lord our God,
and gather us from the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
and glory in your praise.
48 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Let all the people say, “Amen!”

A Message About the Philistines
47 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines before Pharaoh attacked Gaza:
2 This is what the Lord says:
“See how the waters are rising in the north;
they will become an overflowing torrent.
They will overflow the land and everything in it,
the towns and those who live in them.
The people will cry out;
all who dwell in the land will wail
3 at the sound of the hooves of galloping steeds,
at the noise of enemy chariots
and the rumble of their wheels.
Parents will not turn to help their children;
their hands will hang limp.
4 For the day has come
to destroy all the Philistines
and to remove all survivors
who could help Tyre and Sidon.
The Lord is about to destroy the Philistines,
the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.
5 Gaza will shave her head in mourning;
Ashkelon will be silenced.
You remnant on the plain,
how long will you cut yourselves?
6 “‘Alas, sword of the Lord,
how long till you rest?
Return to your sheath;
cease and be still.’
7 But how can it rest
when the Lord has commanded it,
when he has ordered it
to attack Ashkelon and the coast?”
A Message About Moab
48 Concerning Moab:
This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:
“Woe to Nebo, for it will be ruined.
Kiriathaim will be disgraced and captured;
the stronghold will be disgraced and shattered.
2 Moab will be praised no more;
in Heshbon people will plot her downfall:
‘Come, let us put an end to that nation.’
You, the people of Madmen, will also be silenced;
the sword will pursue you.
3 Cries of anguish arise from Horonaim,
cries of great havoc and destruction.
4 Moab will be broken;
her little ones will cry out.
5 They go up the hill to Luhith,
weeping bitterly as they go;
on the road down to Horonaim
anguished cries over the destruction are heard.
6 Flee! Run for your lives;
become like a bush in the desert.
7 Since you trust in your deeds and riches,
you too will be taken captive,
and Chemosh will go into exile,
together with his priests and officials.
8 The destroyer will come against every town,
and not a town will escape.
The valley will be ruined
and the plateau destroyed,
because the Lord has spoken.
9 Put salt on Moab,
for she will be laid waste;
her towns will become desolate,
with no one to live in them.
10 “A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!
A curse on anyone who keeps their sword from bloodshed!
11 “Moab has been at rest from youth,
like wine left on its dregs,
not poured from one jar to another—
she has not gone into exile.
So she tastes as she did,
and her aroma is unchanged.
12 But days are coming,”
declares the Lord,
“when I will send men who pour from pitchers,
and they will pour her out;
they will empty her pitchers
and smash her jars.
13 Then Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh,
as Israel was ashamed
when they trusted in Bethel.
14 “How can you say, ‘We are warriors,
men valiant in battle’?
15 Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded;
her finest young men will go down in the slaughter,”
declares the King, whose name is the Lord Almighty.
16 “The fall of Moab is at hand;
her calamity will come quickly.
17 Mourn for her, all who live around her,
all who know her fame;
say, ‘How broken is the mighty scepter,
how broken the glorious staff!’
18 “Come down from your glory
and sit on the parched ground,
you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon,
for the one who destroys Moab
will come up against you
and ruin your fortified cities.
19 Stand by the road and watch,
you who live in Aroer.
Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping,
ask them, ‘What has happened?’
20 Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered.
Wail and cry out!
Announce by the Arnon
that Moab is destroyed.
21 Judgment has come to the plateau—
to Holon, Jahzah and Mephaath,
22 to Dibon, Nebo and Beth Diblathaim,
23 to Kiriathaim, Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,
24 to Kerioth and Bozrah—
to all the towns of Moab, far and near.
25 Moab’s horn is cut off;
her arm is broken,”
declares the Lord.

8 and put everything under their feet.” In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. 11 Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. 12 He says,
“I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.”
13 And again,
“I will put my trust in him.”
And again he says,
“Here am I, and the children God has given me.”
14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
They shall be my people and I will be their God, in faithfulness and in righteousness. Zechariah 8:8
If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:29
God our Lord, thank you for choosing us to be part of your chosen people. Thank you for being our God. For our inclusion in your Church and in your home in heaven, help us respond with righteousness. Amen.
