Fed to the Lions!!
Verse of the Day:
16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.
Reflection: There was a reason Daniel was so successful as the person the king made the manager over the 120 satraps who ruled over the kingdom. It says that three times a week Daniel prayed to God. When the other men tried to find anything corrupt in Daniel because of their jealousy of him, they could not find anything as he lived a life completely above reproach. So they reasoned the only way we can trip this guy up is in regard to the Law of His God. They knew Daniel was devout and would observe the Law of his God above all else. What an amazing thing that the only way to plan his demise was related to his righteous way of life.
Then they tricked King Darius into issuing a decree and seal it with his signet ring, the seal of his authority. The decree was that no one could bow down to anyone except the king. When the King was of Daniel's disobedience to the royal edict, he tried to find a way to save Daniel. Obviously the King had high regard for Daniel and knew he was blessed by The Lord. Yet he signed the decree and had no other option but to enforce. Reluctantly as he carries the decree he says to Daniel, "May your God save you!", as they sealed the den and threw Daniel inside with the hungry lions.
That night the king entertained no one and it says he could not sleep. The earthly kingdom ruled by Darius had doomed Daniel to death, but another kingdom was on Daniel's side. This was a kingdom Daniel knew about and had experienced and now with his life on line he refuses to bow to the earthly ruler. We will see tomorrow which kingdom prevails.
The question for today is how are we tempted to cave to the pressures of the world when there is much less on the line than being thrown into the den. And what I would like to highlight is Daniel's response when when the jealous satraps find Daniel on his knees praying. And it says Daniel was praying to God for help. Daniel knew what his actions were going bring on him. Much as Jesus prayed in the garden on the night of his betrayal and crucifixion. Daniel knew the king had no option but to enforce his decree no matter how much he personally liked Daniel. It was the perfect set up and there was only one way out, a miracle of God. And that was what Daniel was praying for.
Have you you ever been pushed so far in obedience to God that only a direct intervention will save you? While we may not get thrown into a lion's den, the bible tells us not to be surprised when we are tested as a result of our faith. And in that time of trial as we hold on to the promise that God will work all things together for good, we will see God work in amazing ways and our faith will be purified like gold is purified in the fire.
God give us faith like Daniel to trust in Your deliverance as we stand firm in our faith in obedience to Your Word. When we are tested we know Your Holy Spirit will help us to stand firm and grow to maturity in faith as Jesus trusted you even in his darkest hour.
Psalm 127
A song of ascents. Of Solomon.
1 Unless the Lord builds the house,
the builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.
2 In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to[a] those he loves.
3 Children are a heritage from the Lord,
offspring a reward from him.
4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are children born in one’s youth.
5 Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their opponents in court.
Daniel 5:17-6:18
17 Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else. Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.
18 “Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor. 19 Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death; those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled. 20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory. 21 He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.
22 “But you, Belshazzar, his son, have not humbled yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways. 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.
25 “This is the inscription that was written:
mene, mene, tekel, parsin
26 “Here is what these words mean:
Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
27 Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
28 Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”
29 Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.
30 That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain, 31 and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.
Daniel in the Den of Lions
6 It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, 2 with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss. 3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. 4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. 5 Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”
6 So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever! 7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den. 8 Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.” 9 So King Darius put the decree in writing.
10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”
The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”
13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.
15 Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”
16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”

3 Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.
4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. 5 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.
7 I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. 9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work.
12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.
13 The children of your sister, who is chosen by God, send their greetings.

Christ says, "Who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them, that one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock." Luke 6:47-48
Great Provider, thank you for creating a foundation on which we can build our lives and our faith. Remind us to refer to your words when our foundations become unstable and our world seems to be falling apart. Thank you for being our rock when we need it most. Amen.
