How Do You Know If Your Way Is God's Way?

Readings for the Day
Proverbs 19-21, Romans 13

Verses for the Day
Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a person’s heart,
but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

Proverbs 20:24 A person’s steps are directed by the Lord.
How then can anyone understand their own way?

Proverbs 21:2 A person may think their own ways are right,
but the Lord weighs the heart.

What is the common theme in all three of these Proverbs. We may think and feel in our hearts that our way is right, but it is only God who knows if it is. We all love making plans, but it is easy to get ahead of the Lord's plan. Even if a way seems right to us, it might not be right for us. God's ways are higher than our ways.

So what is God's role? It says The Lord, "weighs our hearts", "directs our steps", and it is his "purpose that prevails"! The scripture says, "our hearts are deceitful above all things." Jeremiah 17:9. So what are we to do?

One, don't assume we know what God's will is, even if it seems right to us. Two, seek out God's will through prayer and turning to His Word. By doing this we are intentionally providing time and space to hear from God and be led by His Spirit. Finally, realize that God's purposes will always be better than ours. We know from God's Word that God desires for us to prosper and be successful.

Proverbs 16:3 says, "Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed."

Where are you trying to discern a next step in your life? I hope these proverbs will provide you with godly wisdom as you decide which way to go. Realize that God is ahead of you and has a purpose for your life that is good and meaningful. As you submit your plans to him, you will succeed in ways you cannot even imagine.
