One of the reasons Moses reviews the covenant was so that the children of the future generation would know the covenant Moses had given them and also know God's faithfulness. One of our duties if you are a parent is to pass the faith on to the next generation. We pass on the faith by telling them the great stories in the bible, but also as we recount God's faithfulness in our own lives.

But as we know the Israelites would turn from the covenant God made with them to serve other gods. When God's wrath burned against them, and the nations asked why God had done this it was because they had rejected his covenant with them. They had brought down the curses God had warned them about, because they failed to trust in God's promises. In the end the people were uprooted and thrown out of their land into exile.

But if the children of the exiles would return to the Lord and obey the Lord and his commands, he would bring them back to this land. God's promises included making them more numerous and prosperous than their ancestors were. In summary,

"The Lord your God will delight in you if you obey his voice and keep the commands and decrees written in this Book of Instruction, and if you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and soul." 30:10

Jesus was eating in one of the homes of a Pharisee, when the Pharisee accused Jesus of not washing his hands before the meal. Jesus took the opportunitiy to expose the hypocrisy of this Pharisee, and all the others. He gives a scathing rebuke of the duality of their life and teaching. They were like cups that were clean on the outside but filthy on the inside. They tithed their mint leaves, but completely disregarded giving justice to the poor and oppressed. They laid heavy burdens on others in the name of God, but did not lift one finger to encourage or help them.

"What sorrow awaits you experts in religious law! For you remove the key to knowledge from the people. You don’t enter the Kingdom yourselves, and you prevent others from entering."

Jesus closes with a stern warning about hypocrisy. Though these religious leaders thought they were getting away with something, one day their dark deeds would be exposed by the light. That's the thing about God, though you may think you are getting away with something, even if no one else knows God does. God is no fool, He cannot be mocked!
