"The Lord is Portion" - Psalm 16
With my Dad's funeral last week, I have not done any daily breads the last week. But I will pick up with Acts 17 tonight.
In the meantime here was the devotion I prepared for our staff today!
The Lord is My Portion!
“Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” Psalm 16:5-8
“I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

The Hebrew word for “portion” has to do with a ration or a part of something divided. The New Living Translation renders the Hebrew word for “portion” as “inheritance” in Psalm 16:5. The “inheritance” is a reference to the allotment of land given to Israel when they entered the Promised Land (Numbers 26:52–56; Joshua 14:1–5). A family inheritance was of great importance in Hebrew society. The land was given by God to His children, the people of Israel, and the Mosaic Law specified that a family’s portion of land must remain in the family. (GotQuestions.org)
The New Testament connects this idea of inheritance a little differently. Since Jesus is God’s Son, he has inherited everything that is His Father’s. Through Jesus’ redemptive work on the cross, we have been adopted as God’s children thus making us co-heirs. The bible says the Holy Spirit is a guarantee or a deposit of our future inheritance.
When a biblical writer says, “God is my portion,” he means that God is the source of his happiness and blessing. He is content with all that the Lord is and provides. He has the best inheritance imaginable and does not seek any possession or comfort outside of God. Riches, honor, friends and fame—nothing is as valuable as the promises of God. “My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:26, NASB). It signifies a deep contentment and satisfaction found in God, rather than in material possessions or worldly comforts. Those who say “God is my portion” acknowledge that genuine abundance lies in God’s presence. They also recognize that adversity-whether physical trials, emotional distress, or spiritual struggles-cannot overshadow the unfailing security found in God alone. (biblehub.com)
