  Audio Readings Elijah Flees to Sinai Elijah learned that Queen Jezebel had put out a hit on his life, so he set out and stopped at Beersheba and then went into the wilderness. At night he was exhausted and sat under a broom tree. He was very depressed and said to the Lord, " “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.” While he was sleeping, an angel woke him up and told him there was some bread and cool water for him to drink and eat. He ate and drank and went back to sleep. The angel woke him up again and encouraged him to eat and drink some more, which he did. He had eaten and drank enough to make a 40 day journey to Mount Sinai. He came upon a cave and slept there for the night.  We sense that Elijah meant, “I can’t do this anymore, LORD.” The work was stressful, exhausting, and seemed to accomplish nothing. Audio Readings 1 Kings 18 The Contest on Mount Carmel This is a famous passage where Elijah challenges 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah. These were the gods King Ahab was worshipping. Elijah ran into Obadiah who was in charge of the palace. Israel was in a famine, so Ahab had sent Obadiah to find some grass for the animals and he runs into Elijah. Obadiah, realizing Elijah was a man of God, fell at his feet. Elijah told Obadiah to tell Ahab he had arrived. Obadiah was afraid to tell Ahab and feared he might be killed immediately, but Elijah promised him he would be in Ahab's presence immediately. When he met Ahab, Ahab ridiculed Elijah as a troublemaker.  When the prophets of Baal arrive at Mount Carmel Elijah takes two bulls and gives one to the prophets of Baal to prepare for a sacrifice. Audio Readings \ 1 Kings 15:25-17:24 Nadab Rules in Israel Trouble begets trouble. The trouble and chaos Jeroboam started now is cascading toward his descendants. Nadab reigned for 3 years, and then Baasha killed him and all of Jeroboam's descedants fulfilling the prophecy the Lord made through the Ahijah, the prophet in Shiloh.  This was the end of the dynasty of Jeroboam. Had Jeroboam remained obedient to the LORD, God promised him a lasting dynasty like the house of David (1 Kings 11:38). Because of Jeroboam’s sin, though he enjoyed a long reign, his son only reigned two years before the assassination of Nadab and the murder of all Jeroboam’s descendants. - Guzik Baasha Rules in Israel Baasha ruled 22 years and was continually at war with King Asa of Judah.   Audio Readings 1 Kings 14:1-15:24 Ahijah’s Prophecy against Jeroboam Today we are going to see Jeroboam's terrible decision making to worship other gods come back to haunt him. His son, Abijah was sick so he disguised his wife and told her to go and find out what would happen to him. He did not want the prophet to know it was his wife. But the Lord told Ahijah what was going to happen. The news was not good. Not only would the boy die, but the rest of Jeroboam's family would die too. The kingdom would be ripped out of his hands, just as it was ripped out of Solomon's hands.  Jeroboam reigned for 22 years, and when he died his son, Nadab became the king of Israel.  Jeroboam sent his wife to discover the fate of his son. The bad news was that the child would die. Yet his death would be a demonstration of mercy, because at least he would be buried in honor and properly mourned. Audio Readings 1 Kings 12:20-13:34 Shemaiah’s Prophecy Rehoboam amassed an army of 180,000 to take back the kingdom from the Israelites. Shemaiah, the prophet, told Rehoboam not to do it. It was the Lord's doing to separate the kingdom and it would not be wise for him to try and exert his will. Rehoboam obeyed the Lord and they went back home.  Rehoboam intended to make war against the seceding tribes of Israel, but God spoke through a prophet and stopped him. To his credit – or perhaps due to a lack of courage – Rehoboam listened to God’s word through Shemaiah the man of God. - Guzik Jeroboam Makes Gold Calves Meanwhile Jeroboam, fearful of the Davidic dynasty growing, creates his own system of worship.   Audio Readings 1 Kings11-12:19 Yesterday. we mentioned God forbid a Jewish male to marry a non-Jewish women, yet Solomon disobeyed this by marrying Pharaoh's daughter. Today Solomon takes it to a new level when he marries women from almost every Canaanite nation that the Israelites had displaced when they took over the Promised Land. God had told the Israelites to not let any of the people remain, as he had predicted that one day the Israelites would intermarry with them and they would lead them into idolatry.  Today this prediction became a reality. Solomon ends up with 700 royal wives, and 300 concubines from all of Israel's former enemies.  Solomon began worshipping the pagan gods of his pagan wives. Solomon even built pagan shrines to pagan gods and goddesses like Ashtoreth, Molech, and Chemosh. God was not pleased in the least and the consequence was that God tore the kingdom away from Solomon. Audio Readings   1 Kings 9-10 The Lord’s Response to Solomon After Solomon had finished building the temple and dedicating it to the Lord, the Lord responded. First, He says that the temple is near and dear to his heart and that He would always watch over it. Then, he gave Solomon the terms of the promise he had made to his father, David. If Solomon followed the Lord with all of his heart and with integrity like his father did, God would continue to establish his throne forever based on the promise he made with David. But, if Solomon and the people disobeyed God and started worshipping other gods, He would uproot them from this land and also destroy the temple. Though the temple was impressive now, if they abandoned the Lord their God, He would make them a mockery and a scorn to their neighbors.
