A New Obedience!

Reflections: Oftentimes “obedience” has become a bad word in our society. We value freedom and the right to choose and do our own thing. Yet we see today that obedience was the key to Israel’s being blessed by God as they entered into the Promised Land. God promised them a multitude of blessings in every way if they but trusted Him to do what He commanded them to do. On the flipside because of His love for them if they disobeyed there would be consequences.

Importantly God wanted to set them apart so all the nations would see that their blessings come from the hand of the Lord. Ultimately their obedience would lead to others turning to God when they saw where their prosperity came from. But as we know Israel’s history they fell into disobedience trusted in other gods and ultimately it was to their ruin.

Then in our gospel lesson we Jesus again confronting a demonic power that had seized a young boy, and not even Jesus’ disciples could cast it out. Jesus rebuked the demon and it came out of the boy and all were amazed at God’s greatness. As Jesus predicted his own death the disciples were more worried about their place in the kingdom than the role they would play in continuing the work of Jesus when he left. We see that they had not yet gotten it yet!

Fortunately as we read on ultimately as the disciples receive the power of the Holy Spirit they too will be able to do what Jesus did and have a new power to obey, the Spirit of Christ within them. As we battle against the principalities and powers of this present darkness today, our obedience will come from the power of the Holy Spirit that is within us. Our new obedience comes from the same power that led us to faith in Christ. We are sanctified of set apart of God’s work and obedience by the same Holy Spirit. As Zechariah the prophet said, “It is not by might or power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord!”

Psalm 85:8-13
8 I will listen to what God the Lord says;
he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants—
but let them not turn to folly.
9 Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,
that his glory may dwell in our land.
10 Love and faithfulness meet together;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,
and righteousness looks down from heaven.
12 The Lord will indeed give what is good,
and our land will yield its harvest.
13 Righteousness goes before him
and prepares the way for his steps.

Deuteronomy 27:14-28:24
Blessings for Obedience

28 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 2 All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.7 The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.8 The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.9 The Lord will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him. 10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will fear you. 11 The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.12 The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. 13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. 14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them.
Luke 9:37-50
Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy
37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time
While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”

But you do see! Indeed you note trouble and grief, that you may take it into your hands. Psalm 10:14

Jesus saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. Mark 6:34

Lord of compassion, we sense the needs of many we pass on the street but do nothing to help. Your sensitivity and concern as the great Shepherd is always at work. Hear our prayer, O Lord. Amen.
