Children of the Light!

Reflection:  Today we see the theme of darkness and light.  Paul says to the Thessalonians they are, “Children of the light and children of the day.”  He associates those who do their work in the darkness with drunkenness and idleness, whereas those who work during the day need to be sober carrying the breastplate of faith and love and hope the helmet of salvation.  This is battle language and Paul knows they are in a war.  He knows the forces of darkness will not stop until one day when Jesus returns to have final victory over darkness.  He states that Jesus did not die for them for them to be in darkness, but to receive salvation and live with him now and forever. Finally, he exhorts them to encourage each other and build each other up as fellow brothers and sisters in the light together.

In Jeremiah, we see a dark time in the history of the people of God. Even though He had called out of darkness into the light, they preferred to be in darkness and follow their own way.  He warns that daylight is fading and the shadows of night are coming soon.  God had warned them that they were following the light but they did not listen, and all the people including the leaders had preferred the darkness over light.  They had developed the hardness of heart that the Psalmist warns in Psalm 95, “Today if you hear my voice do not harden your as you ancestors did in the wilderness where I tested them.”

As we seek to live out God’s purposes today, and hold on to the same promises our forefathers and mothers had in the faith, there is much to apply today.    The psalmist says, “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.” We are God’s people every bit today as the Israelites were, and as the people under Paul’s care in the New Testament were.  God is still in the business of shining His light through the people He has called to represent Him in the world.  And that would be us!

And God is still speaking to us, letting us know what He wants to do in this world.  God is still communicating vision to leaders, who are open to hear God’s voice and have the courage to follow knowing that when God calls them to do something, He will equip them to do it with the help of others.

I was at a leadership conference this week with over 140,000 Christian leaders here in the US, and over 160,000 global leaders around the world. http://www.willowcreek.com/events/leadership/about.asp
It was inspiring to see how God is calling all kinds of people to bring the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Literally God is now raising up leaders in Africa to be sent here to bring the Gospel to us!  The one thing in common with all of these leaders was the courage to not only hear God’s voice but act on it in obedience no matter what the cost.

Today God is still calling us in the Church to hear his voice as leaders and followers, and obey. As we do great things can be accomplished in moving forth God’s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven in His power.  Personally God calls each of us in our own lives to hear His voice and be obedient.  And, of course, we can’t hear His voice if we do not spend time to be with Him worshipping Him and asking Him to guide us and work in us to fulfill His good purpose for our lives.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world and whoever is in me will have no darkness.”  My friends, Jesus has called us to be the salt and light in a world that seems to grow darker each day.  God has called us to encourage each other and sharpen each other as we live this out together.  We are God’s Plan A.  Live as a child of light as God’s Spirit shines through you and in your church!  Amen.

Psalm 95
Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
    let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
    and extol him with music and song.
For the Lord is the great God,
    the great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth,
    and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us bow down in worship,
    let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
for he is our God
    and we are the people of his pasture,
    the flock under his care.
Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,
    as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested me;
    they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”

Jeremiah 5:26-6:30
26 “Among my people are the wicked
    who lie in wait like men who snare birds
    and like those who set traps to catch people.
27 Like cages full of birds,
    their houses are full of deceit;
they have become rich and powerful
28     and have grown fat and sleek.
Their evil deeds have no limit;
    they do not seek justice.
They do not promote the case of the fatherless;
    they do not defend the just cause of the poor.
29 Should I not punish them for this?”
    declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge myself
    on such a nation as this?
30 “A horrible and shocking thing
    has happened in the land:
31 The prophets prophesy lies,
    the priests rule by their own authority,
and my people love it this way.
    But what will you do in the end?

Jerusalem Under Siege
6 “Flee for safety, people of Benjamin!
    Flee from Jerusalem!
Sound the trumpet in Tekoa!
    Raise the signal over Beth Hakkerem!
For disaster looms out of the north,
    even terrible destruction.
I will destroy Daughter Zion,
    so beautiful and delicate.
Shepherds with their flocks will come against her;
    they will pitch their tents around her,
    each tending his own portion.”
“Prepare for battle against her!
    Arise, let us attack at noon!
But, alas, the daylight is fading,
    and the shadows of evening grow long.
So arise, let us attack at night
    and destroy her fortresses!”
This is what the Lord Almighty says:
“Cut down the trees
    and build siege ramps against Jerusalem.
This city must be punished;
    it is filled with oppression.
As a well pours out its water,
    so she pours out her wickedness.
Violence and destruction resound in her;
    her sickness and wounds are ever before me.
Take warning, Jerusalem,
    or I will turn away from you
and make your land desolate
    so no one can live in it.”
This is what the Lord Almighty says:
“Let them glean the remnant of Israel
    as thoroughly as a vine;
pass your hand over the branches again,
    like one gathering grapes.”
10 To whom can I speak and give warning?
    Who will listen to me?
Their ears are closed
    so they cannot hear.
The word of the Lord is offensive to them;
    they find no pleasure in it.
11 But I am full of the wrath of the Lord,
    and I cannot hold it in.
“Pour it out on the children in the street
    and on the young men gathered together;
both husband and wife will be caught in it,
    and the old, those weighed down with years.
12 Their houses will be turned over to others,
    together with their fields and their wives,
when I stretch out my hand
    against those who live in the land,”
declares the Lord.
13 “From the least to the greatest,
    all are greedy for gain;
prophets and priests alike,
    all practice deceit.
14 They dress the wound of my people
    as though it were not serious.
‘Peace, peace,’ they say,
    when there is no peace.
15 Are they ashamed of their detestable conduct?
    No, they have no shame at all;
    they do not even know how to blush.
So they will fall among the fallen;
    they will be brought down when I punish them,”
says the Lord.
16 This is what the Lord says:
“Stand at the crossroads and look;
    ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
    and you will find rest for your souls.
    But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
17 I appointed watchmen over you and said,
    ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’
    But you said, ‘We will not listen.’
18 Therefore hear, you nations;
    you who are witnesses,
    observe what will happen to them.
19 Hear, you earth:
    I am bringing disaster on this people,
    the fruit of their schemes,
because they have not listened to my words
    and have rejected my law.
20 What do I care about incense from Sheba
    or sweet calamus from a distant land?
Your burnt offerings are not acceptable;
    your sacrifices do not please me.”
21 Therefore this is what the Lord says:
“I will put obstacles before this people.
    Parents and children alike will stumble over them;
    neighbors and friends will perish.”
22 This is what the Lord says:
“Look, an army is coming
    from the land of the north;
a great nation is being stirred up
    from the ends of the earth.
23 They are armed with bow and spear;
    they are cruel and show no mercy.
They sound like the roaring sea
    as they ride on their horses;
they come like men in battle formation
    to attack you, Daughter Zion.”
24 We have heard reports about them,
    and our hands hang limp.
Anguish has gripped us,
    pain like that of a woman in labor.
25 Do not go out to the fields
    or walk on the roads,
for the enemy has a sword,
    and there is terror on every side.
26 Put on sackcloth, my people,
    and roll in ashes;
mourn with bitter wailing
    as for an only son,
for suddenly the destroyer
    will come upon us.
27 “I have made you a tester of metals
    and my people the ore,
that you may observe
    and test their ways.
28 They are all hardened rebels,
    going about to slander.
They are bronze and iron;
    they all act corruptly.
29 The bellows blow fiercely
    to burn away the lead with fire,
but the refining goes on in vain;
    the wicked are not purged out.
30 They are called rejected silver,
    because the Lord has rejected them.”

1 Thessalonians 5:4-15
But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Final Instructions
12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.

It shall be one day which is known to the Lord -- neither day nor night. But at evening time it shall happen that it will be light. Zechariah 14:7 (NKJV)

The night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Romans 13:12

O Holy Spirit, you are our light during the day and at night. We thank you for this day. Help us to make the most of it. Help us to let our light shine so that others see you through us in work and at play. Amen.
