Sending Out A Message!
Reflection: Isaiah gives the people a vision for what
God would do for those He had chosen.
Though some of the people had been obstinate and failed to change their
ways, there were still servants whom God had called that would return to God,
and be the cornerstone of the new thing He was doing.
New Heavens and a New Earth
17 “See,
I will create
new heavens and a new earth.
The former things will not be remembered,
nor will they come to mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice forever
in what I will create,
for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight
and its people a joy.
19 I will rejoice over Jerusalem
and take delight in my people;
the sound of weeping and of crying
will be heard in it no more.

the one who dies at a hundred
will be thought a mere child;
the one who fails to reach a hundred
will be considered accursed.
21 They will build houses and dwell in them;
they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 No longer will they build houses and others live in them,
or plant and others eat.
an infant who lives but a few days,
or an old man who does not live out his years;
the one who dies at a hundred
will be thought a mere child;
the one who fails to reach a hundred
will be considered accursed.
21 They will build houses and dwell in them;
they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 No longer will they build houses and others live in them,
or plant and others eat.
Then, in Thessalonians, Paul encourages the Thessalonians
that they had received the Gospel and were living it out in deep conviction and
also in the power of the Holy Spirit.
They had turned from idols to serve a living God. Listen to his words to them:
“For we know,
brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because
our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy
Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. 6 You
became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the
midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. 7 And
so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. 8 The
Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in
God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about
it, 9 for they themselves report what kind of reception you
gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and
true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he
raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.”
We see the same basic theme as with the people in Isaiah’s
time. The Thessalonian’s responded to
Paul’s message and example and became imitators of them and the Lord. Notice too it wasn’t easy, but they believed
and rejoiced in the midst of suffering.
It gave Paul so much joy to see them imitating his way of life and the
way of life in the Lord, and it became a testimony to others in places like
Macedonia (the Philippian church) and Achaia (the Corinthian church). And finally, Paul picks up on the “end times”
(we call this eschatology) theme as well when he says, “We serve the living and true God
as we await for His Son’s return from heaven.”
What gives us hope in the midst of suffering is that we
know Jesus will come back and set up a new heaven and earth; and all the former
things will pass away. That is why what
we do counts and why it is so important to have someone to imitate, and then
become imitate-able (if that is word!!)
May we be like the Thessalonians, and may our words and deeds ring out
to those around us who have yet to serve the living and true God. As we turn from the idols in our lives, we
can give a clear sounding message to those who will also face the living and
true God when He returns one day!

9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,

no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,

you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

4 Since ancient times no one has heard,
no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.
5 You come to the help of those who gladly do right,
who remember your ways.
But when we continued to sin against them,
you were angry.
How then can we be saved?

and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,

Thanksgiving for the Thessalonians’ Faith

Thus says the Lord, "How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me?" Exodus 10:3

Father we need you. We need you with us, beside us, and in front of us. We thank you for your guidance, your wisdom, and your direction. Help us in faith to always follow you
