Is Jesus Greater Than Moses?

First of we have to ask the question, "Why would the writer of Hebrews address the point of Jesus being greater than Moses? Isn't that obvious? It might be today. But as we look at the purpose of Hebrews, it is to show how Jesus is the fulfillment of all the promises made to the Jewish people. We see in chapter 1 of Hebrews, all of the psalms quoted which point to Jesus. In chapter 2, the writer shares that Jesus was fully human so he could undergo suffering, yet this made him the perfect sacrifice for our sins. He was fully human so he could be a merciful high priest, as he made atonement for the sins of the people.

So Jesus was greater than Moses mainly because he was in a whole different category. Though fully God, He was fully human, one of the great mysteries of the faith. Moses served his purposes in his time, but it was in looking to Jesus. Moses helped build God's house by his faithfulness to His calling, despite not being perfect and making some mistakes. Moses was a builder of the house, but Jesus has been appointed over God's house forever.

And then the author says "we are God's house", if we hold firmly to our confidence in Christ. He goes on to warn them that just as those who rebelled against Moses perished in the wilderness, they should not allow their hearts to be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. Finally, this chapter gives us the way to keep confident and not be hardened by sin. He says, "fix your eyes on Jesus!" As Jesus was faithful to God's calling, we can be too if we keep our eyes on him.

No matter what you are going through today, Jesus has gone through it. He was faithful despite suffering in every way possible. Where are your eyes fixed? On your problems? On the temptation that seeks to harden your heart? The things of this world that will one day pass away? As we keep our eyes on Jesus, he keeps His eyes on us. We can be faithful because he was faithful.

Jesus Greater Than Moses
3 Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. 2 He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. 3 Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. 4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5 “Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,”[a] bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. 6 But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.
