Teach Your Children

Scripture: Deuteronomy 11:18-20 "18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth."

Observation: Moses teaches the families of Israel to teach God's word in their homes. These words were to be evident throughout the day, spoken and seen. Morning, noon, and night, they were to have God's words and commands in front of them, in plain view. Why? So they would not forget them, and be careful to do them.

Application: Faith and obedience to God and His Word is meant to be taught in the home on a daily basis. Most of us have a hard time reserving one time a day to read God's word and pray. Then we wonder why our kids don't know the bible or apply it in their lives. Why? Because we haven't taught them, or made it a priority. I can speak from experience, it is easy to make many other things more important than reading God's word with our kids. In our society it is rare that anyone would do this with their kids, even in bible believing homes. And then we wonder why kids leave the church after they graduate from high school. Why? Because aren't firmly grounded in God's Word, and have not been taught how to apply it in their lives. This is not to lay a guilt trip on anyone, but to remind us how God called the Israelites and set apart from the other nations. And what set them apart was obeying God and His commands. I think this is every bit as important today. Try to set apart at least once a day to pray with your kids or grandkids when you have them, and read them God's word and talk about how it applies to your life.

Prayer: Dear Jesus help me to teach my kids/grandkids Your Word. Help me to make it my highest priority so it will go well with them all of their days. May it start with me as I put your Word as a priority in my life. Amen.
