The Voice!!!
3
Psalm 29:3-9
The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is majestic.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,
Sirion[b] like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord strikes
with flashes of lightning.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord twists the oaks[c]
and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
One of the most popular shows on TV these days is called "The Voice", where contestants from around the country sing and compete for a chance to win a recording contract. Today, David uses the phrase "the voice of the Lord" seven times to show the majesty and power of the Lord. David urges all the heavenly beings to ascribe glory and honor to God's name.
David compares God's voice to thunder, lightning and something that shakes the desert and strips all the forest clear. David is saying there is nothing more powerful than God's Word. Just like when God in the beginning spoke and it came into existence. There are two other ways we talk about God's voice.
One, we believe the bible is the voice of God. The bible was inspired by God and written down to reveal God's nature and His plan for all people. Hebrews 4:12 says, "The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any double edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
Finally, we know that God's Word, His Voice, became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus was the Word made flesh. Jesus was the ultimate voice of God and everything he preached and taught spoke for who God is and what God was going to do. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we can hear God's voice and respond. As we read the Word, listen to Jesus, and are led by the Holy Spirit, which can discern God's voice in our lives. And like David, God's voice can be our strength, our peace and our salvation.
