Your Trials Will Go Away, But God's Love Endures Forever!

Psalm 106

Praise the Lord
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures forever.
Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the Lord
    or fully declare his praise?
Blessed are those who act justly,
    who always do what is right.
Remember me, Lord, when you show favor to your people,
    come to my aid when you save them,
that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones,
    that I may share in the joy of your nation
    and join your inheritance in giving praise.
We have sinned, even as our ancestors did;
    we have done wrong and acted wickedly.

One of the most popular mantras in the psalms is "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever." If you read this whole psalm, you will see it is in the context of a recounting of Israel's history. It recalls God's faithful acts of redemption for His people.  But, it also recounts how many times Israel did not remember what God had done for them. Even though he delivered them through the Red Sea, provided for them in the desert, and even enabled them to take the Promised Land; they still quickly forgot God's deliverance.

It is in this context the psalmist uplifts God's goodness and His steadfast love. This is the same as God's covenant love he promised to Abraham in Genesis.  He is hoping that the same steadfast love that showed mercy on his ancestors, would preserve him in God's favor. I am sure he had seen his own share of unfaithfulness and rebellion from himself and his contemporaries.  He figures if God's love never changes, then God's grace and mercy would apply to his sinfulness.

I am sure if you look at your own life, you will see God's goodness and mercy. Psalm 26 reminds us God's goodness and mercy (steadfast love) will follow you all the days of your life and you will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.  As you look at what you are facing today, remember that God's love is bigger than what you are facing.  Though your trials may seem like they will never end, they will.  And by contrast, God's love will never end. He will always remember you, because He chose you to be his child.
