Why Worshipping Idols is Worthless!
2
Psalm 115
Why do the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
3 Our God is in heaven;
he does whatever pleases him.
4 But their idols are silver and gold,
made by human hands.
5 They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but cannot see.
6 They have ears, but cannot hear,
noses, but cannot smell.
7 They have hands, but cannot feel,
feet, but cannot walk,
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
8 Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them.
The psalmist today compares the gods (idols) of the nations, with the God of Israel, which the nations continue to mock. There are several stark differences between worshipping a living God and a dead idol.
It has been said that we become what we worship. Human gods are made and fashioned by humans. They are actually "beneath" humans. Men impute their vices to what they have fashioned with their own hands. This is why some of the fertility goddesses spawned all kinds of sexual immorality. As believers in Christ, our character is conformed to his image through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Human made idols perish like human beings. They are made of material things that rust and fade away. They perish in time. Those who worshp God put their trust in someone who will never die.
Finally, the idols that nations made were impersonal. They couldn't talk or walk, nor make an intelligble sound. But the God of Israel spoke and the earth came into existence. God spoke to Abraham and made the Israelites his chosen people. God spoke the Law to Moses to separate out the Israelites from the nations. God spoke through David who would be a model of the King of kings, Jesus. Finally, God spoke through His Son who came down and walked and talked with us to show us what God is like.
At the root of our worshipping God our Creator and Redeemer, is a response to all He has done for us. Worshipping the One who Created you only makes sense. He gives us the grace which enables us to walk in His presence free from sin. And, He gives us truth to live a life above reproach.
Who do you worship? The God who Created the heavens and earth, or the gods made by men. How have false gods sold you a false and worthless promise. Are you becoming more like the gods of this world, or the One true God who calls us to worship Him with all we have including our lives!
