Luke 24 The Nonsense of the Resurrection

When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tombpmm. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

I love the reactions of the different groups to the resurrection. It is everything from fear, doubt, elation and in this case thinking it was nonsense.  The women were the first to the tomb to anoint Jesus with spices as was the custom in Jewish faith but they found an empty tomb instead. In this case an angel reminded them that Jesus had risen just as he had said.

The women run to tell the other apostles and instead of being met with excitement the 11 remaining disciples think it is a bunch of “nonsense”. Even though Jesus had told them this would happen they wrote the women off as crazy.

It is not surprising that our world does the same thing. The world thinks the heart of what Christians believe is nonsense. Why?  Because someone rising from the dead is hard to believe. In our world of skepticism and idolatry of science most people say prove it to me, which in some ways is understandable.  But we see Peter runs to check out if it is really true he goes to tomb. When he bends in the empty tomb he sees the graves folded up neatly. The text says he goes away “wondering to himself what had happened”. Peter sees the evidence and begins the process of examining whether he believes or not.

Later we know Peter comes to believe and becomes a great apostle for Christ leading many to Christ until his death which many think happened upside down on a cross. The resurrection is the heart of the Christian faith. Jesus has given us all the evidence to believe  if it is literally true. If it is true he really is the Son if God. If not it is only nonsense.
