The Role of the Holy Spirit in Coming to Faith!
We often wonder why some people will never understand the gospel. Why some people seem so resistant to the Good News that God sent His one and only son into the world not to condemn the world but to save it. We often wonder why some people have no moral compass, and consider a Christian worldview foolish or antiquated.
Paul says the key to understanding spiritual matters is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is gift given to those who come to faith in Christ. The Holy Spirit who leads people to faith in Jesus by convicting them of their sin and need for a Savior. In fact Martin Luther says in the Small Catechism, "I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith."
One of the gifts of the Spirit is that the Spirit is a guide into all truth. Today Paul says if we have the Spirit, we have the mind of Christ. The Spirit knows the deep things of God and the mind of Christ. So we have this gift but sometimes we would rather use our own wisdom, effort or arguments. We reason, argue and react in the flesh. As we pray for people who don't know God, or His Son, we should pray that the Holy Spirit would enlighten them and grant them the gift faith. Instead of feeling like you are running into a brick wall when trying to communicate spiritual matters to an unbeliever, pray that the Holy Spirt would draw them to Christ.
