Daily Bread John 9

John 9
Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
1As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
3"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. 4As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

Observation:

The Pharisees and other Jews operated under a worldview that said, “If someone was blind, or had some other malady, that it was the result of either this person’s sin, or someone in their family”. Jesus used this interaction with this man to teach that sometimes we have things go wrong in our lives, or are afflicted with disease or sickness to give God a chance to show his power and strength. Note: this does not mean every person is always healed. Sometimes God’s power is made manifest in being able to suffer under afflictions with the strength that He alone can give.

In this case though Jesus chose to heal this blind man as a sign of God’s coming kingdom coming on earth as it was in heaven. He also used the incident to point out that there are two types of blindness, “spiritual” and “physical”. Of the two, being spiritually blind has much worse consequences. The Pharisees were supposed to see, but were blind, whereas the blind man now could see both spiritually and physically.

Application:

Sometimes when God powerfully works in someone’s life, like these Pharisees, we want to explain it away. We would rather blame someone for something rather than accept a miracle. In this case, the Pharisees felt threatened because here a sinner had received such an amazing miracle. The Pharisees were so caught up with who could be healed and when, that they missed the kingdom of God staring them right in the face.

Although most of us can see, can we see what God is doing in the world? Can we see what God wants to do in our lives? We spend a lot of time tracking the stock market, but do we track the movements of the Holy Spirit? Jesus told us to keep our spiritual eyes open and be ready for His return. What are you seeing lately? There is nothing like being in God’s Word to keep our eyesight 20/20. As we store up God’s Word in our hearts and don’t depart from it, we stay on the right path. Keep your eyes focused on Jesus and He will never let you down!

Prayer: Jesus, help us to see ourselves for who we really are, sinners in need of a Savior. As we discover your Grace and Forgiveness our true vision is restored. Give us a clear vision of your preferred future and keep our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith. Amen.
