Daily Bread 2010 – Matthew 11
Rest for the Weary

25At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.
27"All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
So often when we ask people how they are doing today we will hear them say, “I am tired!”

With all the technological advances and ways to multi task it hasn’t necessarily created more time for rest for the average American (esp. if they have kids!)
Jesus has spent a lot of time doing and teaching and then sending out his disciples to do the same. And in this chapter, he realizes that not everyone he ministers to will respond in repentance, even with the great miracles that have happened in their midst. As all this is occurring, Jesus offers a precious promise to them and by application to us.

He says, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” There are everyday burdens and hassles that we all face, but this is not the burden Jesus is referring to. These, as Drs. Cloud and Townsend say in the classic “Boundaries” book, are like the backpacks we all must carry, as we carry out our daily tasks. But these burdens that Jesus is referring to are more like boulders that are too much for us to bear.

These burdens are the things we are not meant to carry and God alone can help us. It is where we come to an end and God starts. Of course it takes wisdom to distinguish between the two (ala the serenity prayer), but this is worth our utmost consideration. What burdens/boulders are you facing today? As you hear these words I pray you could allow Jesus to carry that which you were not meant to carry. As we follow Jesus we are assured, “His yoke is easy and His burden is light”.

Prayer: God helps us to handle the everyday burdens of life and when we are overwhelmed with burdens we are not meant to carry may we bring them to you Jesus. Thank you for lightening our load when it comes to the really big things in life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
