Daily Bread 2010 - Matthew 7

Matthew 7
The Wise and Foolish Builders

24"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."
28When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

We spend all kinds of money on insurance. Whether it be car insurance, life insurance, health insurance, disability insurance, liability insurance you name it. We do these things to protect ourselves for when the storms of life come. The idea is if you pay some premiums now, you will be protected against possible catastrophic loss at some time in our lives. If one is properly insured the theory is one can sleep better at night knowing they are covered. And of course one has to pay the premiums to keep the policy in force.

My first job out of college was selling life insurance, good preparation for being a pastor right! One of my standard lines was, “the best policy is the one in force when you die!” It was a tough sell because you had to get people to pay for something that was unlikely to happen until later in life and benefitted someone other than the policyholder. The rationale was it was a good foundation for the rest of your investments.

Today Jesus finishes up His sermon on the mount by urging his listeners to not just listen to His words but to put them into practice. In so doing they were building a foundation that could not be destroyed by the storms of life. Of course he was speaking metaphorically, but the point is if one was wise they would not be hearers but doers of the word.

One can go to church, be in a small group and even read the bible, but the sure foundation is built by applying what Jesus says to your life. The great thing I have found is that by listening and obeying Jesus’ words, I am not only securing my future but also able to discover abundant life (John 10:10) here on earth.

Prayer: God help us to not only hear your words but put them into practice. Thank you for protecting us from the storms of life so we don’t have to live in fear but can enjoy the freedom you have always wanted for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
