Daily Bread 2010 - John 2
Jesus Changes Water to Wine
1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine."
4"Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied, "My time has not yet come."
5His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
6Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.
8Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."
They did so, 9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."
11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

We don’t many stories about Jesus’ relationship with his mother, but John 2 gives us a brief glimpse at it. Apparently Jesus and the disciples had been invited to a wedding, and the wedding party had run out of wine, a big social “faux pas” in the culture of Jesus’ day. Jesus’ mom nudges Jesus in the side and says something to the effect of, “They need more wine, can you do something about it?”’ (my interpretation)

Jesus appears a little annoyed with his mom, but reluctantly agrees to do something about it. The reason he gives for his hesitation is that he is start reveal who he really is. He orders the disciples to fill up the large jars that were used for ceremonial cleansing and sure enough when they go to serve it, it is the choicest of wine. The quality is so good that the maitre’d commends the bridegroom for bringing out the best for last.

Not only has Jesus showed grace to the wedding party, but he has done the first of what John calls, “signs”. John uses the word “signs”, rather than miracles. The idea of a sign is that it points to something. It is not the sign in of itself that is important, but where it leads to. This is a great reminder as Jesus’ signs as we will see throughout this book will show the world that He is the Messiah and that believing in Him they might have life in His name.

God we thank you that you brought out the best for last, Your Son Jesus Christ. Just as He filled the jars with water and changed them into wine, fill our hearts with the Holy Spirit and change our lives into a sign for others to come and taste and see that You are good! In Your name we pray, Amen.
