Daily Bread 2010 - Romans 13 Submission to the Authorities 1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. 6This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give thei

Daily Bread 2010 - Romans 12 Living Sacrifices 1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Paul has spent the first 11 chapters describing what it means to be saved by grace through faith, based on God’s Word. In chapters 9-11, he has spent some time explaining how since the Jews rejected Jesus, the gospel was shared with the Gentiles, though a remnant of Israel will be saved. In chapter 12, Paul makes a huge transition with one word, “therefore”. What he is saying is, ‘in light of all this”, you should…! He then says we should offer first our bodies as a living sacrifice. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. 21So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22For in my inner being I delight in God's law; 23but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.

Daily Bread 2010 – Romans 4 16Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. 17As it is written: "I have made you a father of many nations."[He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were. In chapter 4, we see Paul’s frequent use of the word “promise”. This is a key word in Paul’s theology of being made righteous through faith, not works. For it was not through the Law that Abraham became righteous, but through faith in the Promise God made to Him. And this is what faith is, “trusting in God’s promises”. In Galatians Paul writes, “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” Why does faith please God? Because faith trusts in the one in who it believes. When we act in faith in God’s promis

Romans 3 “Righteousness Through Faith” 21But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Paul argues that the purpose of the Law, which is good, is to show us our need for a righteousness we ourselves cannot provide. Righteousness means “being in a right relationship with God”.
