Daily Bread 2010 – Romans 5
Romans 5
Peace and Joy
1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
We now move into classic biblical territory in Romans 5, which will continue on through Romans 8. Paul summarizes the arguments from chapters 1-4, in this big opening statement in verse 1. Since we are justified (or made right with God) through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus.
There is nothing sweeter than having “peace with God”. This is a peace that cannot be found in the world. It is a peace which passes all understanding. It is a peace that we will have with us all of our lives. This peace gives us confidence that if God is for us who can be against us. This peace results in knowing that we are in relationship with the God who created the Universe, and who proved His love for us by sending His one and only Son to die for us so that our righteousness would be based in our faith in Him.
Through this peace we also have hope. We have hope that even though we struggle in this world, one day we will see the glory of God. One day we will see God face to face. One day we won’t have to suffer. One day we won’t have to battle our sinful nature and the power of the devil.
But in the meantime as we walk by faith, and trusting in God’s promises that He who began a good work in us will be faithful to complete it, our character is built through perseverance in the hope and faith we have been given by grace. It is this hope which is the fuel that gets us through hard times, knowing that this trial will not last forever. It is this hope which helps us realize that everything that happens to us makes us into a stronger person and purifies our faith. If we can realize this, we can see a purpose in our suffering which gives us the strength to persevere and lead us to become more like Christ.
God we thank you for the gift of faith. We thank you for the gift of peace. We thank you for the gift of hope. We know that whatever happens to us that you will never leave us or forsake us and these gifts will help us get through anything we encounter in this world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
