Daily Bread 2010 - Romans 10
Daily Bread - Romans 10
1Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
5Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7"or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
Paul, in chapter 10, describes the difference between a righteousness (right relationship with God) based on works, versus a righteousness which is based on faith (trusting in God’s promises). Both have a relationship to the “word”. The righteousness of works tries to live by the word. The righteousness of faith has the word on its lips and in your heart.
The word of faith gets appropriated by confessing that Jesus is Lord and believing in your heart that God raised him from the dead. Notice the difference between doing things to please God and trusting in who He is and who Jesus is. One relationship is based on what we do (performance), and one is based on who we are (child of God).
And as you can ascertain this relationship is for anyone who would call on the name of the Lord, it doesn’t matter what background you come from (Jew or Gentile). Importantly the only way that others who don’t know the Lord can come to him is if someone tells them about Him.
So as Paul has spent 8 chapters talking about how we are justified by faith based on God’s grace based on God’s Word, this chapter tells us how we make this reality true on our lives, by confession and belief that Jesus is Lord.
Have you confessed Jesus as Your Lord and Savior? Do you believe in your heart that He is raised from the dead by the power of God the Father and the Holy Spirit? If not, you can say this short prayer in your heart.
Dear Jesus thank you for coming to this earth to show me the way back to my heavenly Father. Forgive me for my sins. Forgive me for trusting in my works of righteousness thinking that I could earn your love. I trust that you died for me and God raised you from the dead and through believing in this I will be saved. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
