Daily Bread 2010 - 1 Peter 1
Praise to God for a Living Hope
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Happy Thanksgiving! Today, we continue our journey through the New Testament with the book of 1 Peter. Although it appears the author is the apostle Peter, it is most likely someone who was a follower of Peter or knew his teachings well. First of all, this book is written in high quality Greek literary style and it is unlikely the uneducated fisherman from Galilee would have written in this way. Also in the first two verses it indicates this is written to the exiled believers across Asia Minor. The exile happened after AD 70 with the fall of the temple.
Regardless as we open this book the exiled church is reminded of the living hope they have in Jesus Christ and the inheritance that will never fade away. This is an inheritance that is kept in heaven and will be revealed in the last days. Though they face many trials this great hope refines their faith and makes it stronger.
Then in verse 13, they are strongly encouraged to be holy, as the Lord who calls them is holy. Though there inheritance and salvation are secured in heaven, they are urged to use this gift wisely. Since they have been redeemed with so precious a gift as Jesus’ own blood, they should live in reverent fear and they are to love each other deeply from the heart. Since they are born again through these precious promises, they have a new capacity to love and live with the same love that Jesus had when he went to the cross on their behalf.
On this Thanksgiving Day, give thanks for the inheritance you have been given in Jesus Christ. Live a life full of gratitude for this inexpressible gift of God’s grace!
Dear Jesus on thanksgiving we give you thanks for all you have done for us! We want to live lives of gratitude and be vessels of your grace to the world! Amen.
