Daily Bread 2010 - Hebrews 10

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Again, we remember that the word “therefore” is usually a very important word in the bible. It is usually a transition to something really important that sums up our response to a great truth or promise. In this case, the writer has made abundantly clear that the “new covenant”, with the once and for all sacrifice made by Jesus is far superior to the old covenant, characterized by the High Priest making annual sacrifices for the sins of the people and regular burnt offerings.

And then, in the verses above, the author says something very profound that we might miss had we not understood just what an honor it was to enter the Most Holy Place. This was the place that only the High Priest could enter once per year to make sacrifices for himself and the people. But the writer says we now have confidence to enter that place by the blood of Jesus.

Then, we are urged to draw near to God with a sincere heart and full assurance that faith brings. Meaning as we approach God, we don’t have to be afraid. We can have confidence to enter into His presence because of what Jesus has already done.

Finally, the passage ends with two “let us” exhortations. “Let us” hold unswervingly to the hope we profess because, He is faithful. Did you get that? Our hope is based on the fact that God is faithful. It is not based on us! Even though we are called to be faithful, our hope is not based on our own faithfulness, but His!

And the secondly as a result of this hope, we must consider (or think about!) how we can spur one another toward love and good deeds. And do that, of course we need to be around each other in the same place. That is why we must not neglect meeting together (i.e. church!). I don’t know about you, but I can’t get enough encouragement to live out my faith as a Christian in today’s world. As we gather on Sunday mornings, we hear God’s word reminding us of His faithfulness, we receive His sacrament reminding us of what He did for us on the cross, and we receive encouragement from brothers and sisters who are also living in faith.

We know the Day (the Day of Jesus’ return) is coming soon, all the more reason we need to encourage each other. Although we don’t know the Day of the hour we are always to be ready!

Jesus thank you for the confidence you have given us to enter the Most High place because of your sacrifice for us. Thank you for those who you have given to encourage us along the path of faith. We thank you that you were faithful to the mission given to you by Your Father in heaven, and may this faithfulness cause us to stay in the one true faith. In Your name, Amen.
