Daily Bread 2010 - Hebrews 11
Hebrews 11
Faith in Action
1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for.
3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
It is interesting that our worship service at Good Shepherd this Sunday has the same title “Faith in Action”, where after the worship is over the service will begin. Parishoners will go out after the service to serve on one of several projects designed to show God’s love to those in need in Irvine and beyond.
Chapter 11 in Hebrews is has often been described as the “Hall of Faith”. It is a highlight reel of Old Testament heroes in the faith and how their faith inspired them to do great things in obedience to God’s call on their lives. Since this was before Christ, they did this with a faith that was looking forward to the Promise of the Messiah.
Hebrews 11:1 is a wonderful summary description of what faith is. Faith is confidence in what you hope for, and being “certain or assured” of what we do not see. Of course, the only way our faith can be strengthened is when we have to act on it. As we act in faith for things we cannot see, our confidence is increased.
As we read through some of these Old Testament heroes of the faith like Abraham, who sacrificed his only son Issac, and Moses who took a step out onto the sea, trusting that God would deliver him, it inspires us to take steps of faith no matter how big or small they are. Indeed it is by our acting in faith in the small matters that we are given confidence for bigger tests down the road.
Where is God calling you to step out in faith? What are you fears in responding in obedience? How has God been there before when you acted in faith? How can this help you to trust God with your current challenge/invitation?
Jesus you are the ultimate model of faith, going to the cross trusting that Your Heavenly Father would deliver you from even death. In three days, your faith became sight as God the Father raised you from the dead. May the hope of this same resurrection give us confidence as we face challenges in our own lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
