Resist and Stand Firm!
Verse of the Day:
1 Peter 5:8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
As Peter concludes his comments to the young church, which is under persecution for their faith in Jesus, he says the above words. First, he urges them to be alert and sober. Why? Because they are under attack. As they seek to bring God's kingdom on earth as it is in heaven, there is a spiritual battle going on that has been going on since the beginning of time. We have an enemy, the devil, who is opposed to and will try to stop the spread of the Gospel being preached, and the spiritual growth that starts when someone becomes a believer.
But in spite of this reality, Peter urges the believers to resist him and stand firm. Notice this is not a passive strategy. We need to be aware of our enemy and then actively resist him, standing firm in our faith. His main strategy is to try and assault our faith, which saves us. He uses all kinds of strategies to undermine our faith and trust in God and Jesus. In this context, it was suffering. After all why would God allow us to suffer? Suffering can cause someone to doubt their faith with questions like "Why would God allow this to happen to me?" But he urges them to have perspective knowing that other believers are going through the same thing throughout the world. When we know we are not the only ones going through something it strengthens us.
Finally, Peter gives them a promise. He tells them, the God of all grace, who has called us to be with him forever, will, after a while, restores us to make us strong, firm and steadfast. Notice our job is to resist and stand firm, but it is God who restores us to an even greater strength and a firmer foundation. And this is a continuing act of grace, not giving us what we deserve but a free gift. God's grace calls us into relationship with Himself through Jesus, and His grace leads us home to perseverance, even through the hardest of times. From start to finish it is God's work, yet we are called to resist and stand firm in this work.
Where do you need to resist and stand firm today? How is your enemy assaulting your faith in Christ? Being aware of what he is doing is half the battle! Paul says in Ephesians, "Don't be unaware of his schemes!" Of course part of the way we stay alert is to stay in God's Word, which is constantly reminding us of what is true, so when the devil tries to get us to buy into his lies we can say, "that is a lie get behind me!" And remember Jesus too was tempted by his suffering and was offered all kinds of bargains from the enemy to get him to give up his faith in the Father's will! Jesus too, relied on the word of God in the desert and said, "Get away from me Satan ... it is written!"
I hope these verses help you with whatever you are going through! Call another believer and ask for prayer! Meditate on God's Word, so your mind will be sober and alert! And remember Jesus is with you and will never leave or forsake you! Stand firm and resist and God's grace will restore you in due time and make you even stronger! Amen.

The Valley of Dry Bones
37 The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”
I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.”
4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! 5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”
7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.
9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.
11 Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’ 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. 14 I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.’”
One Nation Under One King
15 The word of the Lord came to me: 16 “Son of man, take a stick of wood and write on it, ‘Belonging to Judah and the Israelites associated with him.’ Then take another stick of wood, and write on it, ‘Belonging to Joseph (that is, to Ephraim) and all the Israelites associated with him.’ 17 Join them together into one stick so that they will become one in your hand.
18 “When your people ask you, ‘Won’t you tell us what you mean by this?’ 19 say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to take the stick of Joseph—which is in Ephraim’s hand—and of the Israelite tribes associated with him, and join it to Judah’s stick. I will make them into a single stick of wood, and they will become one in my hand.’ 20 Hold before their eyes the sticks you have written on 21 and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. The Lord’s Great Victory Over the Nations
