Scattered Flock!
Verse of the Day: 11 “‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. 12 As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.
Reflection: As we have been reading all along in Ezekiel about the downfall of the Jewish people, today we get a glimpse of why this has occurred. If we read the verses before the verse of the day, the basic problem was that the shepherds only cared for themselves. Instead of making sure the sheep were fed, they made sure they had enough to eat and were well clothed, but the sheep had no one to tend them. Instead of going out and finding the stray ones and binding up the broken ones, they were content to be unharmed and sitting at home. A shepherd's job is to care for the sheep, and the shepherds of God's flock had missed the mark badly.
So what did God decide to do? He said well then I will be their shepherd. I myself will search them out and find them and bring them back home. I will gather them in from the nations and grant them good food and rich pasture where they will be well fed. I will bind up the injured and nurse them back to health. Of course this is all foreshadowing the Good Shepherd who will come to seek and save the least and the lost. This is the one who will bring salvation (healing) through the cross.
So what does this mean for us today? Are people still in need of a good shepherd? Are there still many stray sheep who need to be found and brought back home to the Good Shepherd? Are there not many who are wounded who need to be tended to and healed in Jesus name? And today God still looks for shepherds who will have a heart for lost people. He searches for shepherds who are less interested in personal comfort than bringing stray sheep back home. Take a moment to pray about the people in your life who have wandered away. Pray that the Good Shepherd might find them and bring them back home.

27 “Say this to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague. 28 I will make the land a desolate waste, and her proud strength will come to an end, and the mountains of Israel will become desolate so that no one will cross them. 29 Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolate waste because of all the detestable things they have done.’
30 “As for you, son of man, your people are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.’ 31 My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. 32 Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.
33 “When all this comes true—and it surely will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
The Lord Will Be Israel’s Shepherd
34 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? 3 You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. 4 You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally. 5 So they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals. 6 My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. They were scattered over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them.
7 “‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 8 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered and has become food for all the wild animals, and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock, 9 therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against the shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.

Must you also trample the rest of your pasture with your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet? 19 Must my flock feed on what you have trampled and drink what you have muddied with your feet?

3 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. 7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
Answer me, O Lord, answer me, so that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back. 1 Kings 18:37
Paul wrote: We have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. Colossians 1:9
Father of all, speak to us. Keep us steadfast in our love for you and guard our hearts. Help us to discern your will for our lives and empower us to be your servants. In your holy name we pray. Amen.
