The Prayer of Faith

Reflection: James, in his letter to the early church, ends with several practical admonitions. It is important to point out what these verses say and what they don't say. Sometimes a biblical text can be taken and meant to mean all kinds of the things it didn't originally mean. And this is the role of good biblical interpretation done in the power of the Holy Spirit.

So what is this passage saying?? Well clearly it is saying if someone is sick or needs healing they should call on the church to pray for them. James says the elders, or the spiritual overseers (pastors,staff, and/or spiritually mature lay persons), should anoint them with oil as a sign of the Holy Spirit's presence and pray for them in faith. There is nothing magical about the oil but it was a symbol of the Holy Spirit's anointing and healing power. Then it says to offer the prayer in faith. All prayer is in faith because by praying you are going to God in. Jesus' name and offering the request to God trusting the outcome to Him.

And then we see the connection between confession and forgiveness and healing praying. Notice it says "if they have sinned they will be forgiven". The mistake can be made that all sickness is a result of someone's sin. This can be damaging to a person, for you are saying not only are you sick but you caused your own sickness. Also error is if a prayer is not answered to say, "well I guess you did not have enough faith and that is why the prayer was not answered!" That would be to assume that God only answers prayer when we are good enough, have enough faith, and are without sin. You can see why this could lead to all kinds of problems and does not do justice to God's goodness, love and mercy.

On the other hand though we see it is important to confess our sins to each other and hear the promise of forgiveness. Forgiveness brings healing for our soul and being at peace with God is ultimate healing in the grander scheme. James says the prayers of a righteous person are powerful and effective. Again it is important to realize none of us are righteous on our own (see Romans 5) but because of Jesus' imputed righteousness we can have confidence when we pray.

You can see there are some things we need to hold in tension here but clearly we are to pray for each other when we are sick and confess our sins to each other on a regular basis. We are the body of Christ and this is how we fulfill the commandment to love each other as we would like to be loved. This is also why it is important to be involved in a faith community where you can practice these things.

Psalm 119:49-56
ז Zayin

49 Remember your word to your servant,
for you have given me hope.
50 My comfort in my suffering is this:
Your promise preserves my life.
51 The arrogant mock me unmercifully,
but I do not turn from your law.
52 I remember, Lord, your ancient laws,
and I find comfort in them.
53 Indignation grips me because of the wicked,
who have forsaken your law.
54 Your decrees are the theme of my song
wherever I lodge.
55 In the night, Lord, I remember your name,
that I may keep your law.
56 This has been my practice:
I obey your precepts.

Ezekiel 27:12-28:10
12 “‘Tarshish did business with you because of your great wealth of goods; they exchanged silver, iron, tin and lead for your merchandise.

13 “‘Greece, Tubal and Meshek did business with you; they traded human beings and articles of bronze for your wares.

14 “‘Men of Beth Togarmah exchanged chariot horses, cavalry horses and mules for your merchandise.

15 “‘The men of Rhodes traded with you, and many coastlands were your customers; they paid you with ivory tusks and ebony.

16 “‘Aram did business with you because of your many products; they exchanged turquoise, purple fabric, embroidered work, fine linen, coral and rubies for your merchandise.

17 “‘Judah and Israel traded with you; they exchanged wheat from Minnith and confections,[c] honey, olive oil and balm for your wares.

18 “‘Damascus did business with you because of your many products and great wealth of goods. They offered wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar 19 and casks of wine from Izal in exchange for your wares: wrought iron, cassia and calamus.

20 “‘Dedan traded in saddle blankets with you.

21 “‘Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were your customers; they did business with you in lambs, rams and goats.

22 “‘The merchants of Sheba and Raamah traded with you; for your merchandise they exchanged the finest of all kinds of spices and precious stones, and gold.

23 “‘Harran, Kanneh and Eden and merchants of Sheba, Ashur and Kilmad traded with you. 24 In your marketplace they traded with you beautiful garments, blue fabric, embroidered work and multicolored rugs with cords twisted and tightly knotted.

25 “‘The ships of Tarshish serve
as carriers for your wares.
You are filled with heavy cargo
as you sail the sea.
26 Your oarsmen take you
out to the high seas.
But the east wind will break you to pieces
far out at sea.
27 Your wealth, merchandise and wares,
your mariners, sailors and shipwrights,
your merchants and all your soldiers,
and everyone else on board
will sink into the heart of the sea
on the day of your shipwreck.
28 The shorelands will quake
when your sailors cry out.
29 All who handle the oars
will abandon their ships;
the mariners and all the sailors
will stand on the shore.
30 They will raise their voice
and cry bitterly over you;
they will sprinkle dust on their heads
and roll in ashes.
31 They will shave their heads because of you
and will put on sackcloth.
They will weep over you with anguish of soul
and with bitter mourning.
32 As they wail and mourn over you,
they will take up a lament concerning you:
“Who was ever silenced like Tyre,
surrounded by the sea?”
33 When your merchandise went out on the seas,
you satisfied many nations;
with your great wealth and your wares
you enriched the kings of the earth.
34 Now you are shattered by the sea
in the depths of the waters;
your wares and all your company
have gone down with you.
35 All who live in the coastlands
are appalled at you;
their kings shudder with horror
and their faces are distorted with fear.
36 The merchants among the nations scoff at you;
you have come to a horrible end
and will be no more.’”

A Prophecy Against the King of Tyre

28 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘In the pride of your heart
you say, “I am a god;
I sit on the throne of a god
in the heart of the seas.”
But you are a mere mortal and not a god,
though you think you are as wise as a god.
3 Are you wiser than Daniel[d]?
Is no secret hidden from you?
4 By your wisdom and understanding
you have gained wealth for yourself
and amassed gold and silver
in your treasuries.
5 By your great skill in trading
you have increased your wealth,
and because of your wealth
your heart has grown proud.
6 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Because you think you are wise,
as wise as a god,
7 I am going to bring foreigners against you,
the most ruthless of nations;
they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom
and pierce your shining splendor.
8 They will bring you down to the pit,
and you will die a violent death
in the heart of the seas.
9 Will you then say, “I am a god,”
in the presence of those who kill you?
You will be but a mortal, not a god,
in the hands of those who slay you.
10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised
at the hands of foreigners.
I have spoken, declares The Lord.

James 5:13-20
The Prayer of Faith

13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them. Genesis 1:27

You have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. Colossians 3:10

Lord of creation, continue to teach us how to live in your image. Clothe us with the knowledge of your Word, and bring us into a right relationship with you. Amen.
